Archie went to Ole' Miss. Peyton decided on Tennessee ultimately because of Cutcliffe. Eli went to Ole' Miss because Chris Simms chose Texas over UT, and we were never even an option for him.

Arch is going to go to whatever school he thinks gives him the best shot at getting into the NFL, just like every other top recruit.

it is interesting that we supposedly hire this great QB guru yet he cannot get a serious look from 5* QB prospects, including guys with family ties to the school and a guy whose dad coaches a UT-system football team. What do the prospects know that we don't?

I don't expect him to visit nor consider us. I'm not sure he would fit in with the offense style at UT today....Not in a couple of years. Regardless, there will be other great QB's out there that can gel with our team. The best QB in the nation does not win NC's. We witnessed that in 98. And as good as Peyton was.......He never beat Florida as a QB while at TN....And Tee did.

Why is it odd that the #1 qb in the country isn't looking at a school that has immediate playing time as it's only argument?

Cooper has zero allegiance to UT.

But even with Cut back in 06-07 our offensive scheme was often described as boring and predictable. Just saying. IMO it was, but we still had a decent offense because (a) Cut is an excellent developer of QBs and got Ainge to live up to his potential, (b) Cut was known as a strict disciplinarian that the players respected (this is probably the biggest reason), and (c) Cut was calling all the plays.

It's often repeated, but if Cut stays for 2008 Fulmer likely would have lasted longer, maybe a lot longer. Having said that, it's rumored that Cut gave up on Crompton and just didn't want to be around when the **** hit the fan. That may very well be true.

Fulmer used Walt Harris' system. He didn't develop anything. Cutcliffe expanded upon it at the time as passing game coordinator. Fulmer was a top notch recruiter so he deserves credit

None of that changes the fact that we are perhaps at the lowest point in program history, at least modern history, but Arch not showing Tennessee any attention shouldn’t be surprising or reflective of our current state because of the mistaken belief that he has some inherent tie to the university. His uncle played here 4 years, and that is where the tie that binds, both starts and stops.

I agree. I also feel Payton came to TN because of our QB coach and his offensive ability. I doubt Payton even knew as much about UT as he did Ole Miss. But as we know, Payton learned to love UT. His nephew will look at the same things. His family will have a lot of influence, but in the long run, unless things turn out to not go well at Ole Miss, I expect him to land there.

Arch Manning or any other top HS QB will go to a school with a coaching staff that has a history of prepping QBs for the NFL or winning championships. We have neither.

Great insight. Bottom line, for whatever reason, Fulmer did really well as an OC and that offensive success continued through his first year at UT, and was cited by Peyton as a reason for coming to UT. At the time UT had one of the more wide open and successful offenses around.

1985 was pretty wide open with Robinson at the helm. You should read the Sports Illustrated article after we trounced Auburn. Some pretty good stuff about our offense in that article
