The "f-bomb"...wow

I used to say swearing showed a lack of vocabulary, but as I've grown older I've learned that effective use of certain words may in fact show a more precise vocabulary that fits the situation better. A passionate leader who lets fly the right word at the right time may get more motivation out of his players than one who remains calm to the point of stoicism.

It helps if the adults in the world understand that.

The right word at the right time?

An impassioned plea from time to time is different than all the time.

I know that our former bball coach and current football coach share vocab with Lenny Bruce and Kevin O'Neill and I think that is a shame.

The last anger dominant cursing coach in basketball I admired was Bob Knight, but I do not think his approach could work today. Too many players coaches and other options to put up with getting screamed at and dog cussed all the time. The last anger dominant cursing coach to succeed in college football? That is easy, it is Nick Saban (Dooley's mentor).

You can scream and cuss and win a lot of games in CFB. You can also build young men who understand about discipline and self control without screaming and cursing, and yes you can also win tons of games.

A well placed four letter word in a speech when typically four letter words are not used by the orator can have exceptional motivational effects.

A continuos barrage of f-bombs can present an image of fear or lack of composure.

As a former coach that rarely cussed around his players, I've seen this occur both ways.

I think some confuse what, IMHO, the true issue with language is. True, words are just words, but there is a time and a place for some types of language, and a time and a place to avoid some types of language.

Some things are just not appropriate around five year old girls and ladies. Mistakes happen and people lose their temper, but a person with decorum considers what he is going to say and who is in earshot of it before actually saying it, and tries to be considerate of others. They don't try to beat their elders through a door, instead they beat their elders to the door and hold it open for them. They don't chew with their mouth open when at a table with others, they chew with their mouth closed, and so forth and so on.

If a coach feels the need to peel the paint off the walls of a locker room to motivate his players, fine. If a coach feels the need to fly off with off color expletives during a game where young children and ladies are in earshot, well, he is demonstrating a lack of upbringing or something.

Like I said, just MHO, my two cents.

So many people don't have any respect for others anymore.

I guess to a lot of ya'll I am old, 36, but I figure it doesn't take age to have class and be respectful. I shudder to think what my daddy would say/do to me if I did something like that when he was in earshot even today. I say ma'am to ladies (no matter the age), hold the door for anyone near me, and say please and thank you. Does that make me better than some? Nope. It does, however, make me more courteous.

This thread and the stench of whining and *****ing oozing from it is described in the image below.

So what? I am extremely respectful to almost everyone I encounter. I hold doors open for women. I say please and thank you. I chew my food with my mouth closed. I do pretty much everything I was taught to do to showcase "good manners" as a child.

I also recognize that, at a college football game, impassioned (and drunk) fans are going to be rowdy and use foul language. It doesn't bother me in the least. If you aren't cognizant of your environment, then it's your fault. Quit complaining about the actions of others. No one is asking you to join in on the foul language, but get off your high horse and judging everyone else. If it's that big of a problem, watch the games from your living room (that was not meant to necessarily call you out, just a comment to everyone complaining).

I can't believe there was cussing at a football game.

I mean seriously.

F... that!

cussing at football games will always be there. judgemental people who think they are at a youth group retreat are complete idiots. Football is a barbaric sport that is a throw back to the cruel gladiators of rome. Lets all ease up on people who want to express themselves with words everyone pretty much use while at home watching the game. My dad may not drop the f bomb at the ball games but he sure as hell does when he is home. I choose to do it at the game. Not necessarily when Im sittin with my dad, but your dad... I'm much more inclined.

Cursing has become significantly more prevalent...

I think that any coach who curses a lot is doing a disservice to himself. It is not effective as a motivational tactic. Kids tune out someone who keeps screaming at them.

It also displays a lack of self control. Mangino lost touch with his players in part because he was fat. No self control. A fat cussing coach is just a huge hypocrite when he is telling athletes to take care of their bodies, eat right and remain composed emotionally in the heat of battle.

Bull. People respond to different motivational tactics differently. When I play sports, a coach getting in my face and yelling at me is the most effective way of getting me to do better. Now calling a kid names is inappropriate, but yelling and screaming at them can be very effective.

Most non-military young people these days have no sense of decorum, and they are lesser human beings for it.

Dog packs often display better manners, but if that's who they want to be, it's still a semi-free country.

I don't know which natty guard post you're sitting at but the military is where I heard the most colorful and foul language.

I mentioned my disappointment about this in another thread, but i feel it needs deeper discussion.

Here is my thoughts:

I'm sitting there and our student section drops the "f-bomb" - I was shocked and embarrassed at the same time. Absolutely the most disgusting thing I have ever witnessed. Do we NOT HAVE ANY CLASS. I know what some will say...they, being bama, are nasty as well. That doesn't matter! I don't know if i have ever been more outraged and disappointed than I am now. I knew we were out matched, but for the life of me I didn't think we would be OUTCLASSED!

I hated that it happened, but thats the way things are now man. Societies changed and believe it or not the f-bomb or any other curse word is not taboo or a big deal anymore. Students at UT are no different than one at Bama or Florida in this respect. Welcome to 2010... err 2011

Drop it a few times in a job interview and see how big a deal it is. It is not used in normal conversation

You need lots of work on your reading and comprehension skills. I can almost guarantee they taught your butt to take your lid off when you went in doors, to salute your officers and you didn't cuss up a storm around the general's wife, now did you?

For the record, I'm not at any natty guard post, I'm not even military, just a military parent, so again, you have no idea what you're talking about, but don't let that slow you down.

I have been around enough military to know that they understand what decorum is about, but I guess you're the exception.

I'm sure in the stands and on the field of the army navy game, the only things muttered is God bless america and bless you. Military people cuss more than the average trucker.... Bank on it!

Huh? So the guy who was in the military doesn't know what he's talking about, the parent of one particular service member does?

How does that work?

I agree... the guy/gal's son is probably the foulest mouth person alive as far as they know.

Yup. Just keep the kids at home. Don't take your mom to the game. You just have to understand that people behaving boorishly is part of the environment. Don't try to advocate that they change. You don't understand, they can't possibly enjoy themselves without profanity. They don't have the self-control to be expected to filter themselves. (should we take their drivers licenses since they have so little control over how their emotions make them act? hmmm) No, EVERYONE ELSE should change. Or just adjust our behavior. Why should the ones being jerks change? It's not their fault, the ref missed the call! The rest of us should just grow up, why would anyone expect the ones behaving immaturely to be the ones who need to.
