The evidence is clear. No need to rush.

I can't believe Butch isn't gone now. I see no reason after losing to Kentucky to keep him around. Maybe it is so he can lose to Southern Miss and LSU. I think Neyland will be empty this Saturday.

I would prefer we get our guy instead of hurrying to hire. I agree about recruiting class not as important as getting the right person.

Exactly. McElwain loses to Georgia, gets fired. Butch loses to Kentucky, yet still has a job. Neyland will have more than you think, its homecoming. It would take much more than a couple of games of fans not attending to cause concern on that side.

All the coaches mentioned wanted to coach at those schools. Alums and dream jobs. Who is dying to coach Tennessee that is currently successful?

Everyone needs to chill. We will get our guy. We will have a good class. We will have long and sustained success.

Yeah because everything tennessee has done in recent memory screams sustained success and getting our guy.

What we really need to unite the liberal academic side and the fans is a transgender coach? Come on guys we care more about gender neutral language than we do about football at Tennessee.

Arkansas took a long time with an interim and they got Bielema who is a huge failure. To assert waiting is always the best answer is as crazy as asserting that doing it quick is always the best answer. The best answer is for the AD to always have a active coaching search folder with the next potential coach already identified.

At the time, he was the best hire of the bunch. He’s been mediocre, but it is a tougher job to win consistently. He was the bigger headline of that news cycle, and isn’t a bad coach at all. He’s just a Big Ten guy stuck with the 5 Star hearts, when the majority is 2-3 star talent. To win at Arkansas this decade, you gotta be shady, like the whole Malzahn-Nutt debacle.

Get ready for a google coach.

There seems to be some legs under the report that Gruden has been approached with $10 million.

Assuming he says "no"... which he probably would.... that leaves a BUNCH of top names on the table who could be had for less. If nothing else, UT could have floated a rumor like this to get the attention of some of the top names.

The short answer it that even $6 million or so gets you significantly more than a google coach.

I'm encouraged at this point that UT is serious about winning... finally.

Let's take a look at what appears to have been at this point the biggest and best hires in college football and see if it tells us anything about wanting immediate closure to Jones.

For now I think these schools all are happy with the process of how they acquired there current football coaches.

Let's start with the obvious,Alabama. They didn't fire Shula until late November and ended hiring Saban after a long wait. Being early to party was far from relavant.

Washington is next. Their coach left them for USC and they were able to hire one of the best coaches in the country in Peterson. They didn't need to be early to the shopping table.

Georgia fans are in love with Smart. Well they didn't fire CMR until late November.

Michigan didn't fire Hoke until early December and got their guy.

Penn state is a great one to look at. There program was in shambles and their coach left them in late December for the NFL but they hired a rock star in
January.

Ohio state hires CUM in late November after having a full season of a an interim.

The only school I think of that fired their coach midseason and the resulting hire ended up being a home run is Clemson. However they ended up hiring Dabo as he was the interim.

So the evidence is clear to me that unless we believe we have DAbo on our staff, which is ridicules to think, there is really no benefit to firing a coach this early in the season. There is no evidence suggesting it is a good thing. In fact if you at places like USC and LSU you will see it is far from.

In closing the timing of butch being fired matters not. The only thing that matters is who is hired and the timing of that doesn't matter either, (see PSU).

If you are going after a current HC or coordinator then you can justify waiting. If there are problems on the team... and personally I think there's plenty of smoke... then you fire the coach immediately.

The other circumstance where you "fire now" is if you are hiring someone who doesn't have a current contract commitment.... or if you top target(s) aren't under contract.

If Gruden has been approached and has shown interest... then that would explain the reported discussions about Jones' immediate future.
