I drill 6-8 holes in the bottom of the bucket with a 3/4" drill bit, fill it about half full, wet it down to let it settle a little, add a handful of epsom salt and powdered milk before adding any more soil.I prefer the trailing nasturtium.
Do you cut out the bottom of your buckets?
Edit: I also prefer the trailing nasturtium, but I'm a "redneck farmer" with the buckets, and I grow the nasturtiums in the holes of my cinder blocks hahahaha
Sometimes I think the tomatoes need a little more space for roots, but the 3.5 gal buckets are perfect for bush tomatoes and for peppers.
