I drill 6-8 holes in the bottom of the bucket with a 3/4" drill bit, fill it about half full, wet it down to let it settle a little, add a handful of epsom salt and powdered milk before adding any more soil.
Edit: I also prefer the trailing nasturtium, but I'm a "redneck farmer" with the buckets, and I grow the nasturtiums in the holes of my cinder blocks hahahaha
Sometimes I think the tomatoes need a little more space for roots, but the 3.5 gal buckets are perfect for bush tomatoes and for peppers.

Round here, they grow their own or buy from one of the big Amish farms in the E. part of the county. Most of the markets are home grown though. The tomatoes are better than anything I've ever been able to grow.

Round here all these markets set up in the parking lots get their veggies from big wholesalers in Nashville, then turn around and make a killing off unsuspecting customers.

Love four-o'clocks! I have a packet of seeds, but I need to prepare a semi-escape-proof bed.

Weekend activity.

Enough pickling cukes for 3 pints dill chips.

6 quarts (short quarts) frozen fresh GA peaches
2 pints canned
1 pint and 3 half pints preserves
(Ate a "few" during the week letting them ripen up to "check" if they were ready so didn't have as many left as I bought to put up)

1 pint pickled sweet japanese pepper.

Didn't get around to hte green beans. Will be picking the first round at lunch break today.

THe only mod I'd like to make is Lowe's has some creosote poles bout 7'long, maybe 2" diameter max, with one pointed end. They're about $9 each. I'd like some of them for the tomato poles and green bean poles. Brother has a hole auger with the small 2" post hole attachment. Pop the hole in the ground and slide the poles right in.
