The Draft was sad

Have you watched Tennessee football the last decade? Those are definitely our rivals. Surely you don't believe Bama, Fla, Ga still consider us rivals do you?
Yea, I caught that too. It's funny how we all have different definitions of "rival", and other words and phrases too.

Lyle Jones. We wont fully recover from that idiot's "Its all about (insert motivational poster phrase here)" claptrap for 2-3 years. We shouldn't dwell on it, but shouldn't expect to just "turn the page" either.

We waived a painted trash can on the sideline for a turnover. Let that sink in. That is the culture CJP has to eradicate. It takes time and graduations.

What makes it worse is the talent gap between us and our rivals is continuing to widen. We brought in some good freshman this year, but our rivals are bringing in so much more. Pruitt is a good coach , but he just doesn’t have what it takes to overcome that gap neither.

Based on what? Recruiting rankings?

Look, you have a coach now who is a superior recruiter and talent evaluator. He knows what a championship roster looks like. He was responsible as the primary recruiter for three high draft picks this weekend who were just 3*s, Josh Jacobs being one.

Further, he and this staff will develop that talent. If recruiting rankings were the sole indicator of talent, Kentucky wouldn’t have had 5 draft picks to Tennessee’s 0. Vandy and Missouri wouldn’t have had more players drafted than Tennessee. And Clemson wouldn’t have handed Alabama its lunch in the NC game.

Pruitt is getting this roster back to where it needs to be and he will maximize that talent. Yes, Bama, Georgia, et al will continue to recruit at a high level, but that’s what they’ve been doing. What’s changing is, so is/will Tennessee now. Which means the talent gap is closing.

Yes. Was hoping Tennessee could have finished 6-6 last year and a bowl to jump start this process regarding attracting talent etc.

Me too. They obviously ran out of gas at the end. But the draft showed that the 2 losses at the end came to teams with superior talent. Sadly. Missouri and Vandy should never have superior talent.

Tennessee also beat two teams- Auburn and Kentucky- that had superior talent.

I put more people in the pros than Butch Jones!! I coached a little baseball team and one of the players "I drafted" was the number one pick for the Cincinnati Reds a couple of years ago! How many first rounders did Butch have?

We have 9 total wins in 2 seasons and people are acting surprised by this? Lol. I don’t understand that logic

Amen, I really don't know what some of these people expect. Some are truly not happy unless they are complaining about something.

We are reduced to Al Wilson limping out to get a cheer. No vols drafted only sec team ....... laughing stock
Careful. Even with a limp, Al Wilson can still bring the woodshed. Most intense player I've ever had the privilege of watching, and meeting in person. Also, a very good man, in general. A true VFL.

I’m glad no one got drafted. That is a reflection on Butch and not on Pruitt. The fact that Pruitt beat auburn and Kentucky(their best team ever, bless it) without nfl talent says it all.
Based on Butch 4 years here alone should keep him from ever being a HC again. Cant develop ,cant coach but can feed you all the BS that you can stomach

Does anyone really care at this point? I mean we have had what 2-3 first round picks in a decade? UK had a top 10 pick. We are an absolute laughing stock. Hopefully we can start beating Vandy, Missouri and SC on a regular basis. Then maybe we can get some 5-7th round picks in the coming years.

I guess I am a “glass half full” kinda guy on this one. Odd that I rarely am an optimist.

So, we had our worst draft showing in our history. Had a few of those these past few years, yes, but even worse is the amount of unsigned free agents we had.

So, from what I gather, we had very little NFL talented upperclassmen. Yet we still had two good SEC wins (road vs. Auburn, home vs. #10 UK). Still almost made a bowl.

With last two year’s worth of talent we have recruited, and seeing the high caliber coaching staff we have, I expect to see staggering results the next few years as these high level players are coached up.

So yeah, that sucked. But the trend line is up, and I do finally believe the right atmosphere, coaching and players are coming here and the horror is almost over.

Can’t believe I supported that idiot Butch Jones.

Almost makes me want to turn in my VFL card.

Amazing how bad Butch was at developing players and getting good coaches.

Nobody. It was clear we weren’t gonna have even a single player drafted even though I read on VN that we’d see Phillips and Tuttle, even Alexis Johnson get drafted.

That said, hopefully our UDFAs can make the most of their opportunities and stick with an NFL team....pulling for all of them, especially Kyle Phillips.

Btw, next year’s NFL draft will see a similar thing where Tennessee players are concerned....which is none or very few drafted.
Pruitt's first recruiting cycle and the ones that follow will have plenty of picks in the future drafts

Well on the bright side, other than Hurd, i dont recall seeing any other "big time" former Butch recruits who transferred getting their name called either. I saw Hendrix, Preston Williams and Venzell Boulware all went as UDFA. So it wasnt just UT and our development. It was just flat out overrated, paper tiger classes by Butch after his first couple ones.
2017- 6 picks in the first 4 rounds
2018- 3 picks. One in the 3rd, two in the 6th
2019- 0 picks
