Recruiting. Pearl is not as good of a recruiter as some believe. I personally believe he is a below average recruiter.

He and this staff did a terrible job of evaluating and recruiting players to fit their system at UT. I realized last season how much trouble we must have been in with recruiting when we had to play a completely contrasting style than what Pearl is accustomed to. Even though it turned out for the better with an Elite 8 run, it really says a lot about this staff's recruiting abilities when you HAVE to switch your style of play after 4 years with the chance to bring in the players you need for your style of play. Maybe I would have given this staff the benefit of doubt if they hadn't mentioned returning to the helter skelter style of play next season.

Many of the four star players he recruited didn't pan out, so I will agree to a point.

I just don't like the controlled chaos stuff. Good guard play beats it everytime.

I agree. If you look at the mid-majors, many of them have guys 6'3 to 6'7 who can 1) handle the ball and 2) shoot fairly well in the context of their schemes, which is usually ball control, work the clock until you get a real good shoot. Aside from Hopson and Tatum, this team has no wingers. Hopson is good but erratic--see today--and Tatum has turned into the biggest wussy in college basketball. We have 1 decent big, who isn't all that good, and we're fairly weak at guard. So yea, the talent isn't here at the moment. Outside of Harris, there are a lot of mid-majors who have more talent than we do. Harris is really the only big-time player we've got--a freshman.

That's more a result of poor player development, imo.

Maybe, but shooting is something you should be able to tell if a player can do in highschool. We have no shooters and no big man that can score. The only way we score is taking it to the rim. We don't even pull up for 5ft shots.....( see Hopsons 3 charging calls today) early in the season when teams didn't know our weakness, they played us man 2 man, and our athletes killed them.( see Pitt game) but once the weakness got out, teams zoned us and our none shooting athletes were finished.

I think player development is overrated in college. I believe there are so many factors that go into the development of a player. If you recruit the right guys for your system that have the desire to win and get better then it makes you look a hell of a lot better at player development.

The downfall of Pearl has a lot less to do with recruiting and a lot more to do with his intentional violations of NCAA regulations and his lies and attempts to cover-up those violations afterward.

That having been said, Pearl isn't a great recruiter.

I think Pearl doesn't evaluate high school talent that well. He has gone after and signed several highly ranked (by Rivals, Scout, etc.) prospects, but many were overrated. The only guard that we have that can shoot the 3 is McBee and he's a walk-on.

Maybe in a empty gym, but McBee can't get a shot off with the D-1 players now! Miss the Lofton and Juan Smith days, imagine if we had those two with Hopson, Tobias, and Chism!!!

He's done a good job of getting decent players. He's not going to get 5 stars at TN. TN could have won if the recruits had of stayed on the team. But this is where he's failed similiar to Fulmer, Pearl has had to suspend some players and TN can't afford to lose one player.

I totally agree with the OP......Pearl has done a terrible job of recruiting, overall. He's gotten the "stars", but not the true stars. Besides recruiting Chism, Hopson, and Harris, his recruiting has been horrendous.

Under his watch, 9 players have either been dismissed or transferred (including Daniel West)... Also, his inability to recruit in the state of TN is really the nail in his coffin. Not even close to a Dane Bradshaw on this team, the best player from the state of TN is probably his son, who was a walk-on. Very sad, indeed...

What was he doing when he violated NCAA violations? That "bump" rule could have easily been avoided by being able to recruit his own state better. He has committed these violations because he is a below average recruiter. These violations don't happen with guys who are being paid over 2 mil a year.
