There are may UT fans (myself included) who honestly care more about beating FL this year than getting to 9 or 10 wins.

I would rather beat FL and only get 8 wins for the regular season than to get to 9 wins and lose to FL.

I hate FL that much.

I was talking with a few buddies and we all agree: CBJ beats FL and he's almost guaranteed 3 more years here in TN..no matter what...the game just means that much to so many people.

But if he loses to FL the noise for his firing will begin to become deafening and if he doesn't finish the season strong he will lose the fan base.

This puts a lot of pressure on this staff.

In many ways, CBJ may know his future at TN after Saturday... even if no one wants to admit it.

3 years might be pushing it, but he will definitely solidify his future if he wins. Regardless, I'm on board with CBJ

I agree it's a huge game. Our talent should take us to the win in this game. We are still learning who we are as a team. Got to get over the proverbial HUMP and win one of these

I mentioned he has to win one of the next four games to prove he is the right coach

Florida - the streak
Arkansas- both coaches hired the same time and Tennessee has better recruits
Georgia - chance at a top 15 team
Bama - streak , hate , and another chance at a top 25 team

A win over flordia will definitely ease everyone's minds, but he has to beat bama to get 3 year job security IMO!

I hate UF too... but there's no way I'd trade 3 years for one win and especially if he starts losing to UF again next year when he should have been able to build a team of his liking.

Jones is guaranteed next year pretty much regardless of how this year pan's out. His clout with the media, boosters, AD, and fanbase as well as last year's bowl win and 2 top 5 recruiting classes solidified that. If we lose to Florida though, he will lose a significant majority of the fanbase that can only be 'reigned back in' if he runs the table the rest of the season and loses only to Bama.

UF can be a launching point for this team and Jones. Win this game, there's tremendous momentum returning home to face Ark then UGA... and UT gets UGA a week after they play Bama. The Vols have an open week ahead of Bama with them going to TAM.

Even if they lose on the road to Bama, the schedule gets MUCH more manageable after UGA and Bama. And even those two games lay out as well as they possibly could.

The UF game is huge for this season beyond the streak and all that.

I think if we beat UF then winning atleast 2 of those 4 is easily within reach. With the way Arky is playing that is a very winnable game at home then with how we have played GA lately that isn't just a guaranteed loss. Not to mention we catch GA at the best possible time. They have a home game against Ala the week before us and if they manage to win that one we catch them at the best possible time. I still don't think we can beat Ala in Tuscaloosa but winning 2 of those 4 is a very obtainable goal. On the flip side if we lose Sat losing all 4 would be possible too. I know a lot of people don't share my same thoughts about this possibly being our biggest game all year from a momentum standpoint.

Ummmmm....can someone just go ahead and make the "Official Game Thread" already so we don't have to open 500 individual threads about this game and what it means?

EDIT: nb4 "you don't have to open the threads". Yes, I do and so do you...admit it

We just posted similar thoughts on how big the UF game is for momentum and the rest of the season. I see it as our biggest game of the year and could decide if we are competing for the East or fighting to get bowl eligible again.

CBJ needs 5 years at least regardless of what happens this year, or next year with UF!! He will get it done, hopefully, sooner than later, but to call for his firing after year 3 is ridiculous!!

I told a very large booster the other day something similar to what OP said -- if we beat FL, Butch is here to stay for a while. He laughed and told me that while a win would be great for UT on many levels, my comment was a reflection of my age and a lack of understanding of how college coaches are hired and fired. I'm 40, he's in his early 70's.

He said it's simple -- a HUGE portion of booster money comes from people aged 50+. And that generation typically only cares about one thing -- BEATING BAMA. The measuring stick for them is, and always will be, beating BAMA. And it's not the fans yelling and screaming in frustration that causes a coach to get hired or fired -- it's yelling and screaming from the BOOSTERS. Yes, fans fill the seats, buy food at the games, purchase a jersey, and occassionally will stop going to games when things look down. But the AD knows that the minute there is a glimmer of hope, the fans will be back in the stands. It's not so easy when it comes to boosters paying millions of dollars -- they want it their way or they are putting their money somewhere else.

Long story short, IMHO, if Butch can't find a way to win the East in the next few years, he better find a way to beat Bama. Starting with a win against FL tomorrow would be a good first step --- Brick by Brick

Just my 2 cents.

We don't need another golden parachute buy out .  Fulfill the contract then if expectations aren't met don't resign . Saves a lot of $$$$. HopefullyButch will beat the teams that matter and all go the above will be unnecessary.

Five years for what? To win a championship? Maybe. To compete for a championship or show steady improvement? ABSOLUTELY NOT. Mediocre performance for 5 years doesn't just suddenly translate into championship caliber because you gave the coach time.

He has to EARN the time... and Jones would probably even agree with that.

18...I agree...the Oklahoma game could have been the springboard but it got away. I can only imagine the difference in the confidence level of the team if they had won. But, it's over and done with and they have to put it behind them even if some of the fan base cannot do so.

The Florida game gives UT another opportunity to breakthrough. If they win, then they have just about as good a set-up as one could hope for in the SEC. Compare the schedules between UF and UT for the next month or so...UT's is far more manageable.

I really think that if we win, and we should, that it will really propel us into having a huge rest of the season.

Right or wrong, if he take UT to bowl games in two of the next three years he not only will not get fired but will receive extensions and bonuses as well. The fans will turn on him a little but the ones that matter will be happy with him as long as he keeps the money coming in. I think the VOLS wiidomuch better than merely qualifying for a bowl but but unless the cash stops flowing in hw will be our coach unless he decides otherwise.
