The difference between Tennessee and other states

Why is it that when you go to Alabama or Florida or Georgia, every other car you see has a sticker of license plate of something of their state team. You go into a restaurant in Alabama and everyone is wearing crimson. In Tennessee, you're hard pressed to find another UT fan. There are more Alabama fans in Nashville than Tennessee fans. We live in a neighborhood of 400 houses and there is only one other family in the neighborhood that are Tennessee fans. The rest are Alabama, Florida and LSU fans.

It's just very annoying.

not the case in Lebanon

WTF is this crap. We fill up the biggest stadium in the conference if I remember correctly. Also, Bama, LSU, and Florida have had much more success recently. There are tons of UT fans anyways.

Midfielder, honestly, I understand what you're saying. When I go out, I usually see more people wearing other team gear than UT. Myself, I wear UT gear EVERYDAY. Like right now...I got on my white UT collar shirt with my Orange & White UT hat. I also find that alot of people here don't like the Vols. For example, I walked in a Mapco in Nashville and the cashier said something like "oh, the orange" or something like that. He was smiling and kidding, but he still was showing that he didn't care for UT. Probably a Vandy fan....? Also, when me and my brother went to play a pick-up b'ball game at the park, someone wearing a Oregon sweater said "all this Orange is going to make me sick". Talking about my Orange UT shorts and my brothers t-shirt. He was just messing around...but still. And just the other day some old guy said "that's the wrong color orange. It needs to be darker with blue." I smiled and said "Auburn?", and he smiled back and started the Gator Chomp. I just smiled again and walked away.

Where is all the Orange & White at, folks?!?!

the reason there are so many fans of other teams here is b/c all these people from Alabama, Georgia, etc move to TENNESSEE b/c it's a better state than theirs!

/end

i know i made it to 5 games last year in knoxville and i live about 20 miles north of memphis
there have always been a long line of cars traveling up interstate 40 with tn decals

I live in Kingsport and work in Bristol, VA. It's pretty heavy Orange country here, but I do see a lot of Va Tech colors, especially in Bristol. Personally, I have been all Vol as long as I can remember. I remember going to a game when I was a kid. I loved seeing Rickey Townsend kicking barefoot.. I remember Bill Battle recruiting my cousin out of North Carolina and thinking how COOL it would be for my cousin to play for UT. Too bad he went to UNC. Yep, I've been a Vol fan all my life....

There's also a lot of Michigan and Ohio St. fans is the mid-state area. I went to school at MTSU and two of my best friends are from Michigan and Ohio and both are fans of their respective state teams, but their families had moved to Tennessee after their fathers lost jobs in the automotive industry. They moved down here for jobs at Nissan, GM, Saturn, etc. After hanging out with them for a while, I realized just how many Buckeyes and Wolverines there are in and around the Nashville/Murfreesboro area.

I know first-hand that 25% of Buckeye fans couldn't tell you one thing about thier team 10 years ago. That is a HUGE bandwagon.

well, there are alot of michigan fans because alot of them are moving down from there cause of the lack of jobs in detroit, there's a big increase of people moving from michigan...but ohio state is up there with SC for the biggest bandwagon for sure

You are right about Memphis, But wrong about the rest of west Tennessee, I live in west Tenn, And it is 90+% vols! We think it is communism to live in Tenn. and not be a VOL fan! GO VOLS!

I agree. Even in Memphis there are a good number of Vol fans. You go 20 miles outside of town and it is heavily orange.

Everyone I have met or talked to from South Carolina has said that Tennessee was either their favorite college team, or in the top 3...I thought that was surprising. Not sure what their connection is to Tennessee, but I find it cool that they are fans of Tennessee. Maybe I just happened to find the good seeds from South Carolina or something

I tried to make that point in a basketball post. Tennessee is historiclly a divided state. Like I have siad before, if you are west of Knoxville, chances are you are a bandwagon fan...or a fiar weather tn fan.

That's true for every college team. Outside of the University's alums or the college town, most the fans are fair weather fans.

It's probably because they wanted to follow the careers of the players we recruited out of their home state. If I remember correctly, the 98 team had at least 5 starters from SC. I lived in Charleston for years and most of my friends who were SC fans had nothing bad to say about us, 100% of their hatred is directed at Clempsun.

When I moved to Chattanooga from Knoxville in the early fall, all I saw on cars were Alabama flags. Amazingly after they choked in the title game, every Bama fan simultaneously lost their flag.

Its like that in Alabama. Huntsville is Solid Orange for sure. They even broadcast Vol Calls on Huntsville radio. As for West TN...Jackson, Humboldt, Milan, Paris (Teague) , Selmer, Savannah, Lexington, Henderson and North and South on or just off of US Hwy 45 and east from Jackson on 22 to the river (Parsons, Camden, Deacaturville) are 'All Vol"...can't say the same for Memphis and vicinity.

My wife (and all of her family) went to the University of Michigan. They are all always commenting on how many UT people they run into and how they thought Michigan fans represented well, but UT fans show more school pride. The other thing that surprises them is that when I see a UT fan we talk for 10 minutes or at least say "Go Vols", "How bout them Vols" and Michigan fans do no more than nod at one another.....

I had a bet with a Clemson buddy while we were in Germany together that I would see a Vol before he saw a Tiger. First I saw an old German man get in his car with a power 'T' in the back window, then I met a wounded soldier with a Heath Shuler #5 jersey in Heidelburg. He had that tattered jersey his whole tour in Afghanistan. I told him about the bet and he peeled that jersey and handed it to me on the spot!

I spent $180 feeding 8 wounded soldiers a nice lunch that day and when I turned the receipt in to my company and told them what it was spent on...APPROVED!

Heath's number was 21!

Shoot here in east TN I see nothing but TN fans that definitely represent. Orange stuff is everywhere you look form window flags to the orange shoelaces on an infant's feet. If you are anything but a TN fan here your face will be knocked in, at least where I live.

I live in Sparta but do 95% of my everyday stuff in Cookeville. There are a few Bama fans here and there, but orange is everywhere here.

One thing I have noticed is that the secret is out about our wonderful and beautiful state and we are getting a ton of imports from Fl, AL, GA, and all those damn yankee states. So take it as a compliment that they love our state and hate theirs enough to want to move here.
