The difference between Tennessee and other states

I think part of the issue is business- meaning that people actually move here from other states for opportunities. They bring their baggage. I KNOW thats the case here in the ATL, few Falcons fans here but almost every other team is well repped !!! I actually take it as sort of a compliment (though a back handed one). We are a better run state, we'll be better than those in football soon.

Why is it that when you go to Alabama or Florida or Georgia, every other car you see has a sticker of license plate of something of their state team. You go into a restaurant in Alabama and everyone is wearing crimson. In Tennessee, you're hard pressed to find another UT fan. There are more Alabama fans in Nashville than Tennessee fans. We live in a neighborhood of 400 houses and there is only one other family in the neighborhood that are Tennessee fans. The rest are Alabama, Florida and LSU fans.

It's just very annoying.

When I was in college, a buddy of mine (he of the famous fake punt,) got into a bit of trouble because he was one of a goup of Vandy players who were taking UT plates off of cars parked around campus.

Judging by their "Wall of Fame," that might explain a percentage of bare front bumpers.

Surprisingly I see many vol fans here in stl. Stayed downtown this weekend for a bachelor party (ironically at the same hotel as the Stanford girls) but saw many ppl in vols attire. I'm sure they bought final four tickets early expecting to see tn play, but still good to see... We have also found a rather large alumni group to watch football games with, good times

It could be the fact that the state of Tennessee is just a much better place to live. You don't see UT fans in Bama because it's an awful place; we know better. At least gators and such are smart enough to know how much better out state is

A lot of these bammers move to TN for jobs and they bring their bammer crap with them. Some are just bandwagoners that think it is cool to root against the VOLS.

It is annoying but I have seen it in bamma too, but you don't have too many people from other places moving to bammer except to work at the Mercedes plant.

Florida has 3 high profile teams. In south FL you see mostly Canes, in middle and north Gators and Noles with the occasional UCF or USF.

TN may have more than its fair share of dirty bammers but that just shows how pitiful they are, they have to come to TN for a good job.

Memphis is on the Arkansas/Mississippi/Tennessee border, and Chattanooga is on the Alabama/Georgia/Tennessee border as well. A lot of people from the other stats commute to the city for work and social outings. When the 1st and 4th largest cities border SEC states, there's gonna be a mixture of fanbases. There are plenty of Vols stickers and plates, but we just don't remember them because it's only natural. But when we see a Bama flag in Nashville, it catches our eye and we remember it.

Nashville is unique. It supports a NFL team, a NHL team, a SEC university, and due to it's country music heritage, is roaming ground by people from all over the south.

Pay no heed to the Florida bandwagoners. They'll fade out like the early 2000s Miami fans did when their reign ends.

I am an East Tennessee redneck whose blood ran deep orange before I ever went to UT and got two degrees. Been in Louisiana now for 26 f'n years and still homesick all the time. Year before last went to a UT alumni gathering in Dallas to watch the Vol/FL game. Those people looked at me funny for yelling at the big-screen TV; what's wrong with them people???

Because people are bandwagon jumpers. They probably go for North Carolina in basketball too, don't they?

Oddly enough, if you drive around western NC you'll see as many if not more UT icons than UNC.

Part of this will be resolved if CLK and staff can start winning some of the in state recruiting battles and reconnecting with those communities. In a small to medium sized town, loyalties will follow the home town hero. CPF burned many bridges by ignoring very good instate players for relatively equal out of state players.

I live in Chattanooga. If you go to Hamilton Place Mall to get UT garb, you have to literally pick up and move other team colors just to get to the Tennessee stuff. I know that Chatt is very close to Georgia and Alabama, but it is still Tennessee for God's sake. Walkin' in the mall is probably the most infuriating experience (other than dealing with Florida fans) because anybody that's not wearing black emo crap is wearing Bama, UGA, or Florida crap. Makes me so mad I could spit.

just because a team is in that state doesn't mean you must automatically cheer for it. You can watch pretty much every decent team in the US on TV every week so the choices have increased.

Plus, I didn't seen it mentioned that it's what happens when you border something like 8 other states.

I've met several UT fans all over Bama, UT fans all over Atlanta and I ran into UT fans everywhere when I lived in Hampton Roads. I don't really think UT fans are any harder to find than Bama or UGA or even the real USC. Probably harder to find than ND fans though.

Yeah, Nooga is weird. Haven't lived there in ten years but there are a lot of bandwagoners. Like my post above, a lot of these roaches come to Nooga for work or to socialize thus there are a lot of bammers and dawgs. Of course just like a roach they only wear their maroon when they get national media.

No kidding. I remember last year there was bammer stuff EVERYWHERE...until the day after the sec championship. Then after the national championship, the Gators fans come out of the woodworks. You're definitely right about Hamilton Place too. I can't look in any direction in that place and not see a georgia G. :bash:

I will say this though, I know that when I go to alabama or georgia, I wear more UT gear than usual, just because I feel like it's my duty.

A friend of mine once opened a door in Chatt for a woman wearing a bammer shirt. He laughed and said, "You know, I probably shouldn't even be opening this door for a bammer fan." She asked him, "well, who are you a fan of?" He replied, "What state are you in?"

awesome.

Haha! Love it! I've been know to tell a bammer "why don't you go get a job in alabama if you hate Tennessee so much?"

we're all over around here. I ran into a guy in his 60's the other day that commented on my hat and asked if I was an alum like he was. Also the flight attendant on our plane back from FL yesterday said she liked my power T tattoo since she was from Knoxville.

The wife thinks it's funny that UT fans are all around.

Not that way in GA particulary north of Atlanta. I'm always having people speak or wave to me when I'm wearing Tennessee stuff. I see as many or more Tennessee license plates/car stickers as I do UGA stuff.

This pretty much sums it up Dickens. I believe that is the main reason.

However, here in Northeast TN, about all I ever see is Orange, just the way I like it! :) There are your occasional Bammer fans who has no ties to Bammer whatsoever. I think they just wanna be different. And every once in a while you see a dawg or gator hat or car tag, but that is about it.

You are right about Memphis, But wrong about the rest of west Tennessee, I live in west Tenn, And it is 90+% vols! We think it is communism to live in Tenn. and not be a VOL fan! GO VOLS!

I agree. I have lived in West TN and Middle TN. West TN is pretty much all Vols! I think Middle TN (the Nashville area in particular) just has so many not native to Tennessee that it seems as if no one is a Vol fan, but they're here!

Its what happens when you live in a global society. The people on here screaming for bammers to go back to alabama are morons. I live in Florida, yes I like living on the beach and never seeing a flake of snow, but I root for my VOls. I have pride in my school. I don't think I have to remain living in the shadow of the hill for me to rightfully display that pride. Diverse groups of fans make sports fun. It is BORING to go watch a game without the other side represented. I for one like fans of other schools on this board and around me in general. Trash talking to yourself is not fun.

The TN love in North GA is very apparent.

I was wearing my UT apparel last september the week of the Florida game. I was eating at a Cracker Barrel about 45 miles North of ATL. As I was leaving to decent looking co eds came up to me.
"Go vols, I hope Tennessee beats Florida!, We are huge TN fans!"
I just told them thanks, and good look go GA as well. They shook their heads and was like GA? We are TN to the bone and we live here.
Only if I didn't have to get going on business....

I think this thread is way off-base. I have family from Columbus, and they always go on about how UT fans are all over the state. The last time they drove through Nashville, they even called to tell me that there are more Tennessee fans sporting swag than Ohio State fans in Columbus. Again, that was Nashville.
