This team had some problems last year that led to us losing 4 games. We all assumed or were told that those problems were fixed during the off season. 1st game back not only are those problems still there, but new ones have appeared. It looks like the team regressed during the off season

I think a good portion of our fanbase is still cautiously optimistic.

You can't please all of the people all of the time. Tennessee wasn't the only team having opening day problems, hopefully we'll see the team we expected come Saturday.

Because they had light practicing no hitting etc.. allowed to just coast through. player led instead of being coached.

Its one game dummy.

Its the same irrational thinking that led some to think we would get beat by Missouri because we only beat North Texas 24-0.

One game proved nothing.

We had 8.5 months to prepare for Appy St., we have superior athletes at every position on the field, our coach is being paid about 15x's what the Appy St coach is being paid, it's our home opener in a season that we are expected to win the East and double digit games......and we put absolute hot garbage on the field. We were outplayed and outcoached for 95% of the game.

Butch is 23-17 with 2 wins versus SEC teams with winning records, and has a history of blowing 2 TD leads. I'm not saying we can't get it done this year, but honestlyI wouldn't be surprised if we end up 8-4, especially with UGAlooking better than expected, Bama rolling as usual, and A&M looking like they've righted their ship. Sorry, I'm hopeful we put a better product on the field Sat night in Bristol, but won't be surprised if we don't.

My take on the whole situation.....we are 1-0.

Other ranked teams such as LSU, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, UCLA, N. Carolina, SCjr, are all 0-1. After tonight, either FSU or Old Piss will be 0-1.

QUIT YER BELLY ACHING for crying out loud! Its great to be a Tennessee Vol.

"We have superior athletes at every position on the field"

You'll have to try harder to convince some Vol fans that the Vols had superior talent to Appalachian State, it was not apparent at all

My high school football team went 2-8 my ffreshman year. The two teams we beat were both in the top 5 in the state.

You just can't underestimate the "motivation" of 18- 23 year old kids.
Nothing, including a complete a$$ whipping of App St. could have helped this staff or motivated this team more imo.

To be fair, some of those do actually "suk" as you put it. Hype obviously can't mask it.

Oklahoma, LSU, Notre Dame, USC, UCLA, North Carolina...or 25% of the top 25 would gladly trade places with our ugly win. One more will be added tonight also

A lot of things have changed. The most obivious to me in the first game was it seemed that in the first half, Tennessee was "out hustled" by App State. That could have be the severe let down after Sutton fumbled the punt. That letdown followed by a tremendous in energy the fumble gave App State was difficult to overcome. I am sure a lot of work on the sociological aspect of will be address in practice this week.

I was hoping we'd be in Atlanta come December at 10-2 with wins over Florida and Georgia. All of those are still in play, so I'm still holding out optimism.

After watching this weekends games I'm just glad we got the W. There's a possibility of 3 top 5 teams going down and 4 top 10 teams going down. Not to mention almost half the SEC lost their week 1 games for the first time in 20 years. We usually have to wait until later in the season to see this type of chaos but we got to see it week 1 and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed all the games except ours of course. Hopefully we stop scheduling these dangerous Group of 5 teams and paying them over $1M to play on our field. There are no positives or negatives in winning against teams like that and at the end of the day they just proved they can hang with the Power 5 schools. Either schedule an FCS cupcake to get a tune up for week 1 or go ahead and schedule a Power 5 home-and-home for week 1. It's not worth $1M to play a dangerous team with no benefit of winning to start out the season. All we can hope for is they learn from that game and play lights out the rest of the season.

A win is a win. I'll take it. App State is over and we're moving on. We'll get a glimpse, hopefully, of what this team really is on Saturday, but I don't think we'll really know anything until Sept 24.

I've bounced around to other message boards to see what they have to say about week 1 and while a lot of our folks are acting like chicken littles, most rivals are in agreement that Appy St. is a good team, you can't judge a team based on week 1, and think we'll see a completely different team week 2. Our rivals (UGA, UF, USCjr) are saying this. They're not counting us out yet. If we come out flat again Saturday I'll jump on the "sky if falling" bandwagon, but I think we're gonna see a completely different outcome at the BaB.

This!
UGA folks as always claiming the east and more will now be theirs after their win.
I agree and I think this app st W was actually a good thing. Last years team would have lost that game.

Agree with most of your points but the App State team is a lot better than most people give them. Still, we laid an egg & lucked out. Give the D credit for good 2nd half.
