The defense HAS to improve and Butch HAS to accept responsibilty if it doesn't.

Star count does not count as credit for early playing time. A 5 * true freshmen isn't by default better than a 3 star Sophomore or Junior.

Or a 3* freshman or any other player on the team. I don't get why people are so hung up about recruiting rankings once players are in college. They were given rankings in high school. Where they are on the depth chart now is where they rank on the team.

Sir do you understand the term "vanilla defense"?
Do you understand the term "take a chill pill"?

So because you think one of the best DBs thats ever played couldn't have defended some of those passes, that that is an excuse as to why they were completed? Typical VN excuses.

Why can't people just admit that our D got torched by an inferior team? Our D sucked this past week. They need work.

They got torched but they were very good passes. I think some of them were just lucky passes because the QB had people in his face. I'm still excited about having a team with talent again!!

I think Drew Richmond was on the bench also. come on Negavols complain and flame away

Well said. Had to give ya a like on that one BOT.Some people are just in denial and making excuses. Butchna your a smart***!

Yes, I concur my friend.

Butchna is definately a smart a**.

You'll have to admit that's much better than being a dum bass.

A dum bass gets caught and fried and we see lots of that here on VN.

The OP and this thread prove that, LMAO!

Yes, the D needs work, so do our special teams and our O.

Until we are 100% perfect we'll always need work at every position, always.

You can bet our coaches and players are already working hard to get better so relax and enjoy the WIN of game 1.

Game 2 is on the way and it will be a much tougher test for us.

Won't surprise me if Dobbs passes for 350 yards Saturday.

#BrickbyBrick...VFL...GBO!!!

Lots of hyperbole here. Always is.

This part is true tho...those deep balls down the post were perfectly placed a half step in front of a wideout who never broke full stride. They were thrown where no man..zero..who was a full step behind the receiver could possibly do anything to stop the catch except grab the receivers jersey and get a flag. Once the Germinator beat the jam at the line of scrimmage it was over. I don't know that I have ever seen a college qb throw that route any more perfectly. Over and over and over. If Dobbs could do that, which that route is his worst from what I have seen; we could win at least the east. Assuming we have receivers who can consistently beat the jam at the line in tight man coverage. The jury is still out on our receivers IMO because our leading receiver Saturday was an 18 year old kid who has been playing that position for about 3 weeks.

I feel dumber by reading this thread.
I'm the anti-Butchna... :)
And OP has to be related to Nationdom, too many stars to stare at

I got frustrated watching that game too:banghead2:,but after watching it again I calmed down. They run Baylor's offense, which nobody can stop (Baylor), they hit on a few 9 routes, which is one of the toughest passes to complete, that QB made some perfect throws, and we were down our secondary coach. It was the first game, lets see how much we improve the next couple of weeks. I still think if we stop the run and make teams sling it around our DL will get a lot of sacks. Bowling Green got rid of the ball quick, and we barely blitzed at all. We got a big sack on one of our few blitzes.

They get hung up on recruiting rankings because that is what we do as a society. Too ignorant and/or lazy to take the time to fully understand something. But we feel entitled to add our opinion and expect for it to count for something. The people hung up on stars don't understand the game enough (or comprehend they don't have enough evidence and information to form logical opinions) and so all they can do is take a system simple enough for them to understand to use it as a outlet for spouting off entitled opinions. Player A was given more stars than Player B, and while I don't really understand the game of football, I did complete 1st grade where I passed 'counting' with flying colors. 5 is a bigger number than 3! 5 stars are better than 4 stars. 4 stars are better than 3 stars. Easy game. Let's run with.

Idk why everyone is giving O'Brien flack. Dude is good. Had a good game. If anyone on the Dline needs to be bumped down then it's Kendall Vickers. Many times he stood there and just let the guard or center just block him. I agree we need to get McKenzie more involved along with Kirkland. We will be okay. Also butch should take responsibility if we get beat and our defense struggles and I think he will accept full responsibility.

What does this mean?

There is no such thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's like a vanilla offense? Cept it's DEFENSE? :hmm: Maybe we invented the term, but the concept has existed.

Is the OP seriously suggesting starting a true frosh DE over Maggit and Barnett? Those are two of the best DEs in the SEC. The frosh DE did play, I'm pretty sure.

As for DT, Kahill MacKenzie was limited due to being banged up a bit is what was said in the radio pregame. He did play a bit later in the game and Tuttle got in early. Not sure what the issue is there. I have also heard that MacKenzie, who sat out his senior year, might still need more conditioning. Not sure if that's true but it would make sense if it was.

The only legit issue you raise, maybe, is the MLB. We all know that position is like the captain of the defense. In which case, maybe Butch doesn't trust the true frosh yet. Makes perfect sense to me! Other fans have stated it seems like Butch would like the true frosh to step up and he isn't there yet mentally. Also FWIW, a lot of people didn't seem much difference at MLB between the two.

Our problems Saturday were in the secondary, not on the DL or even in the LB corps.

OP you need to buy a vowel or three. Maybe Vanna can help get you a bit smarter, since you seem even blonder than her. :)

The "taking responsibility" part confuses me. I've never seen Butch dodge responsibility and although I have not heard the post game presser, I would be very surprised if he did in this case.

Just because a kid is a 5 star doesn't make him an instant starter. The coaches know the little things we are not privy to, such as nagging injuries, conditioning, knowing the plays and alignment. I would expect McKenzie, Tuttle, and Martin and Kirkland to take over at sometime this year when they are ready.

Keeping a 5 star DE and 5 star DT on the bench, and starting a walk-on at MLB, over a highly talented 4 star MLB, is unexplainable. Derek Barnett as a freshman was phenomenal. Urgency should trump youth for the Vols' 2015 defense. I know Jumper and O'Brien play with a lot of heart, but would they be starters on any other SEC team? The season could easily end at 5-7 without some changes.

Thanks coach. I am sure the defense will improve and the best players will find a way to get on the field.

U realize obrien was a pretty highly sought after 4 star recruit right? Who's also spent 3 years perfecting his craft in a college strength and conditioning program. I'll take obrien on my team any day of the week I don't see why anybody wouldn't want him on the field. That's no knock on tuttle and Mckenzie there gonna be phenomenal players but obrien is the farthest thing from a slouch

I wouldn't say torched. We got beat a couple plays deep that killed us but besides for a couple big plays we looked pretty good on defense. I'm not saying it was an acceptable performance but if we eliminate the big play in that game you'd be looking at the performance a lot different.

Regardless still need to improve to beat Oklahoma

Amen. Our D did get torched, period. They had wide open receivers many times. And only one or two "perfect" balls were thrown by their QB...our guys simply got burned on the others. We had guys out of position and just flat outrun.

Here is the proof...
