I'll have the privilege of attending the Nuggets-Warriors game on Thursday, as well as Clips-Warriors on Saturday. It's almost imperative that Nelly's crew defend their homecourt against Denver.

Observations from tonight's tilt at Oracle:
1. They aren't the most politically astute crew, but the Denver Nuggets' coaching staff has as much pure basketball knowledge as any ever assembled.
2. If he had a healthy Baron Davis during his short stint with the Hornets, Tim Floyd would still be coaching in the NBA.
3. Warrior games are about the only place in the NBA where the you see actual working class people in the stands in large numbers. That's why it's as good an atmosphere as there is in the league.
4. The Warriors must acquire a defensive presence. Otherwise, they're just going to continue being an entertaining novelty act and not a real contender.
5. Kenyon Martin and Marcus Camby can play on my team anytime.
6. Allen Iverson is the Ric Flair of the NBA. He gives you everything he's got every night. The ticket buyer always gets his money's worth.
7. Monta Ellis is a star. Right now.
8. I say it every time I see him play. With his skills, JR Smith should score 20 points per night.
9. Al Harrington has never been the same player since he hurt his knee.
10. I'm beginning to worry Don Nelson may finish his brilliant career having never won the ultimate prize.

Did you get to see C.J. play at all?

Observations from Golden State's staying alive win over the Clippers:
1. Again, Monta Ellis is absolutely sensational.
2. Tim Thomas is Exhibit A as to why I could never be an NBA GM. I would continually acquire guys with his enormous talent, then realize why he's played for almost everyone else in the league when I saw his indifference up close.
3. NBA groupies are by far the hottest in sports.
4. NBA scouts and personnel aren't thrilled at the prospect of trading in road trips to Seattle for treks to Oklahoma City.
5. Stephen Jackson is, despite the perception created by the Malice In The Palace, one of the real standup guys in the NBA. He's a team leader and a wonderfully charitable force in his community.
6. Elton Brand appears to have recovered nicely from his Achilles injury.
7. Andres Bierdrens is developing into a top notch player.
8. While the exact guys aren't available, what Golden State needs is a Kenyon Martin or PJ Brown circa 1998 type player.
9. The Warrior dancers give the Heat squad a run for their beautiful money. Have I mentioned lately that there is no more perfect specimen on Earth than an NBA dancer?
10. It's a shame either the Nuggets or Warriors are going to miss the playoffs. That ensures that one of the league's most entertaining teams won't be part of its showcase.

2. On-court character tends to be the first thing I notice about a player.
3. NFL players are usually introverts and baseball players are usually not fit. Basketball wins.
4. The city of Seattle and state of Washington are still going to war trying to keep the Sonics around. Nobody but Oklahoma City wants the franchise to move there. If the team continues to suck, it will be a failure of epic proportions.
5. I always thought so.
9. You know we've had those talks.
10. Welcome to the 2007-08 Western Conference.

I'd say the groupie love comes down to:
1. NBA players being more easily recognized in public than most other athletes (they're all tall, their faces are not covered by a helmet or cap)
2. They're better paid than NFL players
3. They have more off days than baseball players

It appears the Warriors are going to be left hoping for a miracle. Denver is hammering Houston. If that holds up, it's going to take a Denver loss at home to Memphis and Golden State wins at Phoenix and against Seattle to get Nellie's crew into the playoffs.

Off topic, but there is a great article in today's LA Times by Mark Heisler about the Spurs. It's must read stuff for any true NBA fan.

He's cutting it close for sure

LAKERS: 2007-08 Laker Girls

you must be kidding. the lakers get the best talent in the country by far due to the fact half of them think they this will be a way to get into the entertainment industry.
The Heat dancers make the Laker Girls look like McDonald's counter girls. Golden State, Denver, and the Knicks are also all better. The Laker Girls are comparable with the Dallas and Seattle squads.

Who do you see the Clips taking and how much help will they get?
Depends on what the doctors are telling them about Livingston. I was in the media room before their game Saturday night and everyone seems optimistic. If he's healthy, I think they look for a three and try to trade Maggette for some more depth to go with Kaman and Brand. Otherwise, they probably look at a guy like Bayless and keep Maggette.

Hat, what do the Lakers have to do to get past the Spurs? I hope every day they can do it, but in my heart I just can't make a logical reason that they will

I'm not sure the Lakers are going to see the Spurs. In making predictions, my greatest weakness is staying with a team a year too long. I'm picking San Antonio and Detroit, but fear they're a year too old. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the Spurs get beaten by Phoenix. They just aren't scoring. That said, no teams know how to succeed better in the postseason than the Spurs and the Pistons. Nothing that happens in the West will surprise me. Any of the eight playoff teams in that conference would be contenders in the East.
