The Culinary Arts Thread

Aldi is a regular for me. Save a lot of money for basic items. If you try to buy everything at Kroger you'll spend $200 on a shopping cart 25% full.

Trader Joes by far one of my favorite stores but it's not like a full on super market. They have a mixed selection of stuff.

Always go to Aldi first. What's they don't have dtermines where I stop next. Walmart if necessary cause it's Walmart. Hate it, but it is what it is. Kroger, only cause it's accross the street from Aldi and mainly because they are reall good about having a loss leader or two in the meat department every week. I won't do a whole list there. But, since I do go, I take advantage of the fuel points. Our new Food City was disappointing price wise. I can spend less at Kroger. Publix is more expensive than Kroger. But, I have to go there to get a Tri-Tip or pork belly. And their fried chicken is the best in town. As well as their subs. But, it's also only a convenience stop. Would not do a full list there. In a real pinch, I do have a choice of 6 DG's within 10 minutes of the house. 2 are at each end of our road.

Why would I go to Trader Joe's and spend more when I can get the exact same things at Aldi cheaper? Aldi owns Trader Joe's numbnuts. They just inflate the prices for the Trader Joe's crowd to make them think it's something special.

My dad was a Kroger loyalist cause of the fuel points. Never could convince him he'd save more money going to Aldi and paying full price for gas. I have actually compared. Before Bidenflation, I could do a full cart at Aldi for roughly $80 w/o mush meat, or maybe $120 with a couple weeks worth of meat. Half that buggy at Walmart or Kroger is $175 plus.

This is a fact. or two. or three

Aldi doesn't have all of the items that Trader Joe's carries and there is very little at TJs that is considered "expensive". Good grief try going to a Trader Joe's so u can learn what u speak of DA

Kroger here switched all deli meat and cheese to Boar's Head. Talk about expensive. Dayum does not express how must a pound pound of Boar's Head sandwich ham costs.

I don't know, Kroger has jacked up the prices on their deli meat. If it's not on sale usually the Boar's head isn't that much more and it tastes better

But, Aldi does have some seriously good imported stuff, cold cuts, and specialty cheeses at good prices.

The irony of it all is eggs. Doesn't matter what store I go to in town, Eggland best Large dozen is $2.97. Store branded eggs range from 3.30 to 4.20. Now, does it make sense you can buy Egglands best cheaper than store branded.

No choice at ours. It's all Boar's Head. BH roast beef is like 12 or 13 a pound. Ham is over $10, or right close.

Aldi doesn’t own TJ’s. Never did. The two chains were started by brothers back in the day.

I like TJ’s, although some of their produce is pretty shaky (spoils quickly.)

And they stopped carrying their blue corn chips! 😢 (Not the ones with the whatsit seeds.)

This gais got it figured out. It's a science
My wife is too impatient. She's a one stop shopper, so when she goes to the grocery I cringe. I prefer to go but it takes me a minute or two since I multi store shop. But the Debits are more pallatable. Then she's calling wondering where I'm at. My answers are usualy not met with appreciation for my humor.

Oh Contrare:
Both Aldi Nord (as Trader Joe's) and Aldi Süd (as Aldi) also operate in the United States with 1,600 stores between them as of 2017.

Both Aldi are owned and operate independently, but have contractual supply chain relationships. Thus, you may find some cross over products at both stores. Aldi and Trader Joe's are German store chains.

They have almost anything you can get at Trader Joe's at Aldi. It might be under a different name or different branding, but they do.

Don't disagree but he didn't even consider distance in any of this. Aldi is a good 15-20 minute drive for me. Trader Joes I could literally walk to. Add gas to that an cost is negligible. And there really isn't much at TJ that I would consider "expensive". I'd say it's cheaper than Kroger.

uh first of all that is false. I can let my wife log in and she can tell you how wrong that is since she shops at both every weekend

I wouldn't consider it expensive either compared to Kroger or Harris Teeter or some things at Publix. But the prices are indeed inflated if you compare the same items at Aldi.

Considering TJ is in the Aldi framework of sorts, I'd think the prices are reasonable. Maybe it's a slightly upscale Aldi. Each brother going after a niche, but not spoiling the concept. It'd be nice to have one close to visit. We'd probably have to go to K'ville or Nashville or Chatt. Cookeville is probably large enough and affluent enough to support one.
