Yes. But he was also a first year starter. I do think we are better overall with him gone from an on and off the field angle, but I also think highly of Heupel enough that another offseason together would have resulted in progression. How much? That is the 2 million dollar question, but I believe in Heupel's abilities enough that there would have been improvements.

No offense, but I don't think another year, two or three will improve Nico no matter who the coach is. Not sure he has a desire for the game or the processing ability to allow him to function at this level much less the NFL. And until he separates from his father's influence, he's hamstrung with little hope of reaching the level we all thought he'd achieve. Heupel can't create what's not there in the first place.

But I thought his dad's complaint to Coach Heupel was that the players around him at Tennessee were not good enough???

Consider that he only threw for around150 yards or so, and we call that his great game. At the time I thought about it, but I thought it had to do with the flow of the game. Now we know he struggled to get above 200 yards passing in a game.

If they have any kind of mediocre or better B1G schedule they will be rocked. Pops thought he had enough clout to get Oregon and got UCLA instead. No person with a pulse would have thought UCLA offered better protection than even a Vandy in the SEC.

Nico has been thrust into the position of having to carry his team on his arm and his legs. He leads the team in rushing attempts and rush yards. He’d doesn’t have the supporting cast for the coaches to protect him like Heupel did last year. People complained about play calling against Oklahoma last year after we got up two score but it was the coaches not wanting to have Nico throw against a very good Oklahoma secondary - just give the ball to Sampson and play killer D. The UCLA coaches can’t do that.

I think Nico will improve but he’s gonna learn under fire. He’s a redshirt sophomore so he has two more years to play after this one. He could still be a pro prospect but he’s gonna learn needs lots of improvement.

And he’s probably not going to be at UCLA either. I suspect he will end up with a better team next year…. He’s probably already shopping

If he still wants to be a pro prospect, he will enter the portal again end of season and get out of LA. And do not take pops with you again.

True, but gonna be a hard sell now even if he leaves daddy on the porch. He's yet to prove any interest in anything beyond his own ill-perceived worth.

Best thing for Nico after this year is to go find a good QB &HC somewhere in G5 or FCS next season. Get his game right, and his attitude and re-deploy a new person for his last season back in P4.

I predict Nico will end up getting better as the season goes on, but he still won't have a very good season overall. He'll probably end the year with similar stats to last year. A very average P4 Qb. And then he'll transfer to a P4 program desperate for a starting QB, probably someone in the Big12. It will be like Colorado, AZ, or TCU or some school like that.

Likley but he's gonna be a hard sell. The whole world knows how he was shopping during the season. His mind was not on the task at hand.

Somebody needs to tell UCLA's opponents to stop piling on Nico.

Through two games, Tennessee’s old QB and UCLA’s new one has been pressured on 32 of 78 dropbacks (41 percent), more than any other Power 4 QB.

True, but he's probably a 1 done type for next season regardless and whatever teams might be interested would likely understand that up front. He'll try and improve his draft stock enough to get him drafted somewhere. But his 1st round aspirations have all but disappeared.
