I have a question. The techical foul called on Bruce over the weekend, when he stepped outside of the coach's box seemed unnecessary. Is this something new this year, why are refs all of a sudden calling technicals on this when coaches have been stepping out of the box forever? Did the NCAA inform the refs to now follow this rule to the letter this season? :bad:

It's not like he was cursing at refs when he stepped out, he was very energetically calling out instructions for this team.

I think there was a statement prior to the season by the NCAA saying they had informed referees to pay closer attention to the rule and enforce it. We had a thread about it back then.

I could be mistaken, but I understand the rule somehow refers to discourse with the referees (as in, shouting/cursing/arguing calls, etc.). In Pearl's case during the Xavier game, he was clearly trying to coach his players on defense -- so I think the referees used poor judgment in making that call.

it probably was a crap call, but it's hard to argue one one has broken the rule as written

I like the rule in theory, it keeps lunatic coaches from being a distraction to the referees during the game. However, just like with any theory there are often times exceptions. I don't like the idea of calling a technical foul when there really hasn't been any kind of "real" infraction. That being said, I didn't like Pearl's comment after the game about "i'm not going to change the way I coach." I think as a professional, he needs to reevaluate that statement because being willfully ignorant isn't going to win any ball games. If there is a rule that's clearly being enforced, he needs to change his behavior in order to fit the mold.

There really isn't a new rule for it. But before the season they said they were putting a stronger "emphasis" on coaches leaving the coaching box and if they use extreme gestures and motions. Stuff like that. Kind of like last year they decided to focus on palming the ball as well as this year.
