Wait, is this post true?
He is indeed an awful gameday coach. Not just him but his defensive staff as well. I really thought he would progress as a sideline coach as time went on. He does everything else well but he's just a disaster in game.
He actually let the Offensive Coordinator make the decision on whether to go for 2 points or not when they went up 26-14. They have it on video. He originally signals for two and then you can read his lips talking into his headset saying "What do you want to do Mike"? (The OC). What head coach does that??? Truly unbelievable.
I haven't seen that if so. Highly doubt it. I'd certainly hope not.
The op on that board just cuts and pastes clay Travis' rant from his web page.
He's making the same poor game day decisions he made here and at Central Michigan. Watching the Florida game reminded me of some of the decisions against Louisville and Rutgers in 2012.
That being said, people will complain about him but it will take another year of crapping the bed before he is in any jeopardy of losing his job.
When he left for Tennesee I told my buddy, "He's a hell of a recruiter and motivator, but he's sh*tty game manager. They'll find that out soon enough."
I can't even count the times at a CBJ coached game where I yelled, "WTF are you doing Butch?!??!"
That thread scares me as a TN fan.. I'll be honest.
The observations there are exactly what we're seeing here. Now, let's hope Butch gets pressure to correct those problems. Only time will tell unfortunately.
The only problem I see in this is his assumption that Florida would NEED 3 possessions if the 2-point conversion failed. Here the real potential scenarios:
1.) Tennessee kicks the PAT to go up 27-14. This forces Florida to score 2 touchdowns AND make 2 PATs to take the lead. And Tennessee knows all too well that making PATs is not a gimme, especially in this series.
2.) Tennessee goes for 2, and gets it to go up 28-14. Yes, Florida needs 2 touchdowns and 2 made PATs to tie. This would be ideal, but not always feasible. And I'm not sure Tennessee would've made it.
3.) Tennessee goes for 2 and fails. The score remains 26-14. This means Florida only has to make 1 of 2 PATs after 2 touchdowns to win the game. NOT 2 field goals and and a touchdown. And plus, Tennessee has used one of their, what, 3 2-point plays? What if they needed them in OT?
I agree with that USA Today article that says Jones needs to feel how the game is going and adjust. That's obvious. But I don't completely agree with the statement that he was 100% wrong taking the point. And I don't get the assumption that Florida would need 3 possessions to do anything. None of the possible scenarios makes it an automatic 3 possession game.
