"The Call!"

No one a scored on any defense on either team yesterday.

If you eliminate free throws and transition baskets from each team, both teams got zilch for much of the game.

I don't care what defense was being played.

I disagree a little.

UT scored pretty well against UF in the first half and vise versa in the second half.

It was a good game. Florida put it together down the stretch. It is what they do.

Well, when Florida went on their run, we weren't matching up very well playing man. We looked completely gassed, which would have been a perfect time to go to the zone to at least see how Florida handled it.

imo....kasey hill struggled yesterday and it would be interesting to see how much florida scored while he was on the floor.

for the most part, when tennessee went zone, hill was on the floor.

Game tied 45-45 with over 4 minutes to go. Referee single handedly gives Florida a 4 point lead while throwing out Tennessee's most dominant rebounder in this game. You can say what you want to about the rest of the game but this one call handed the game to Florida on a silver platter. It was a d--n shame that two teams had fought their hearts out for 36 minutes and the referee decided the game. I kept trying to see and I think it was Maymon who yelled "What?". If you watch the replay, you will here a loud what above the crowd. Since no one else knew what had happened it had to be him. So we have a player stoked to the extent with the adrenalin flowing questioning why he was called for a foul that could have gone either way. He thought he was fouled. So in disbelief he approaches the guy who made the call and according to Cuonzo did not curse the ref but asked what had happened and gestured that he was the one who had received the shoulder. What decent ref with the game on the line would have made that call? Was the fix in for a Final Four Southeastern Conference referee? Just asking?:ermm:
First of all, it's the coaches job to talk to the ref. A college kid should keep his mouth shut. Secondly we only scored 14 points in the second half; we were not going to win this game anyways.

I think the largest lead for either team the entire game was 6 or 7 points, so when the officiating leads to a four point swing in game that tight on a very questionable call it is not good for the sport in general, and the losing team in particular.

Doesn't matter. UT only scored 14pts second half.

I agree the ref should've swallowed his whistle, instead of calling the T.

However, if you have ever known or been around any one who refs the game, they'll tell you it was the right call. Regardless of what Maymon said, a lot of refs see it as a player trying to 'show them up' by arguing a call.

Regardless, as others have already said...this call had little to do with our lack of offense during the 2nd half...which is what cost us the game, IMO.

They may tell you that, but it still doesn't make it the right call.

'04 UF-UT football game comes to mind right away with the phantom clock stoppage.[/
Yep 10 years ago, I don't clearly remember, was it a game changing event?

Yes. From my recollection, they called a penalty on UF near the end of the game and the clock should have restarted, but didn't, which forced UF to punt the ball back to us with enough time to kick game winning FG.

UT was up by 10 just before the half.

Both seniors Maymon and Barton knew better.
After 4 years of playing ball you just don't make mistakes like these in close games.
Maymon's plea was too demonstrative. Could have argued all he wanted with a hand over his mouth or a smile on his face, like he usually does.

Not sure about the conspiracy theory part. However, I don't understand why refs feel the need to decide games like that. Unless he cussed out the ref, warn him not to say another word, and let the game go on. With the D that was being played by those teams it's hard not to argue that it was at the very least a game-changer, if not decider.

I just saw something on outside the lines about coaches going over the line. Mike Davis was at Indiana when he went nuts and got thrown out of a game. BEFORE the T was called that got him tossed, he was yelling and on the court with eyes bugging out and you could read the ref's mouth as he told him to WALK AWAY at least 4 times before he threw him out. It was Indiana vs Kentucky and a very emotional and intense game. He warned him four times. Maymon was not warned once and the idiot just T's. Stupid and no way to excuse the Ref for being so idiotic.

Gator fan here. The call on Maymon was horrible. Absolutely pathetic. What could the ref possibly see there? The game was being played like a rugby skirmish, now you call a foul when neither player really touched each other (Young probably contacted Maymon more). Maymon's reaction was normal for a guy that didn't do a thing. He was trying to show the action and the ref overreacted and T'd him up. The ref ruined a fantastic game for me.

I wanted the Gators to win but never like this. It seems to be a trend in sports for the refs to make themselves the focus of the games. They are made men like the mafia. No one can ever question them and their poor performances will go unquestioned.

Senior, did Florida score against the 1-3-1?

I think we played it for 3-4 possessions and I don't remember them scoring off it. They tried that lob and Moore came flying through the air like batman to break it up.
If you go back to the game in Knoxville, Tennessee ran the 1-3-1 against Florida for seven minutes cutting the lead from 7 to 1 with 3 minutes to go and went back to man-to-man. Florida did not get a field goal against it then. So Tennessee, counting this game, ran the 1-3-1 defense against Florida for about 9 minutes and held them scoreless both times and then went back to man-to-man and lost both games. Sometimes, I honestly think Cuonzo does not want the zone defense to show up his man-to-man, which he prides himself in. I honestlly believe that. It's the only reason I can think of. The other time they ran it for any length of time was against Alabama for about 15 minutes in the second half there. They were so shell-shocked that Tennessee increased its victory margin from 7 to 17. They will not advance in the NCAA tournament if Cuonzo does not use it as a MOMENTUM STOPPER!

How many points did Florida score off of turnovers in the second half? Tennessee's 1-3-1 defense is a turnover machine! When they slapped it on Florida in the game in Knoxville, Florida turned the ball over the first three possessions they had in addition to not having a field goal the seven minutes Tennessee used it. When the offense is not clicking, and Tennessee really struggles against a zone defense, you have to create turnovers just like Florida did. Billy Donovan threw 3 different zone defenses at them in the second half according to ESPN. It's called halftime adjustments. When Tennessee refuses to play zone, they are setting themselves up to lose. They would have half a dozen more wins this year if they could use the 2-3 and the 1-3-1 that they have flashed, strategically in games. Cuonzo Martin seems to be incapable of doing that!

Maymon Is a senior. You suck it up and play on. BS call but that's what you get when you play the number 1 team in the country who has dominated everyone. They will beat the piss out of Kentucky today.

Man to man is best with this teams length. Why throw a zone on Florida...I seriously don't understand

"@pat_dooley: Found out what Maymon said to Pat Adams to get T'd up yesterday -- "Don't talk to me like that." Twice.”

I've said all along it is a shut down defense for Tennessee as you know! I'm glad you noticed! It's beyond me why they run it for one or two possessions and then go back to man. If they want to advance in the NCAA they can't just rely on the man-to-man. Notice how strategically Donovan used the zone in the second half!

The 1-3-1 always has diminishing returns. It's a great surprise defense for a few possessions, but teams start sending shooters to the corners quickly, and it's all she wrote for the 1-3-1.

Beilein tried to run it exclusively for a few years at Michigan, and it almost cost him his job. Now you see him run it only as a change up defense, and only for a few possessions.
