The Butch Jones Show

Quit watching. Format couldn't be further from what I want to see in a coaches show.

The coach's show serves a very different purpose now than it did in Fulmer and Majors' day. And it's not just here, take a look at SportSouth on a Sunday and you'll see pretty much every show is like ours now.

The show as it is now is meant to be a 1-hour recruiting pitch to high school kids across the country. It is shot and planned 100% with selling the program in mind, not showing highlights.

High school recruits have no interest in watching a coach break down highlights. They want to see behind-the scenes pieces, player features, highlights set to music. And that's what the show is now. The player features show recruits how they will be promoted when they're at Tennessee and that's very important.

You're free to complain to the Vol Network. I'm not sure that they would disagree with you. But it's not going to change. It is reaching the audience that it is now intended for. Ratings from local stations say the viewership is as high or higher than it was 5 years ago.

I don't understand why everyone is acting like the format is new this year. The show has followed the same format segment by segment since Dooley's second year. It is identical this year to last year.

The Fulmer play by play was way better. I've watched pretty much every Butch Jones show but I'm not sure why I bother. The production is good but it's the TV equivalent to a snow cone. Looks cool, but not much substance.

I doubt high school guys are checking their TV schedules to see when any coach's show comes on. High school kids don't watch TV.

It's all about REVENUE. Sponsors, advertising, any claim to viewership numbers.

It's not about content.

Butch is not a TV guy; but, not a lot of coaches are anyway. It is a salary fulfillment for him, that's all.

I come from the media business, Butch has very little input about shows content. This is about money. IMG and the AD make the calls. Butch just collects his check as part of his financial pkg.

What's the point of that format in today's market though? Back when there were a lot of untelevised games and limited highlights, it made sense. But why do I want to watch a cut up version of a game I just watched with coach speak in the background?

These shoes have always just been an advertising vehicle to supplement coaching pay. Might as well fill it with content people will watch and use it as a sales pitch.

I always enjoyed hearing why a coach ran a certain play at a certain time from the actual coach. Imagine if it were still in that format...Butch might tell us why he threw the challenge flag or why he didn't go for a score before the half lol.

Probably did away with that format in the Dooley era because he had no idea why he called what he called lolol.

Bobby Bowden's show was hilarious. He really did act like he was seeing the plays for the first time and had no idea what was going to happen next.

I'm sorry, but you're wrong. The show is all about recruiting. It's about a one-hour weekly ad on the program.

True, they're not getting up early to watch it on Sundays, but they're watching. Whether it's on YouTube or on cable, they're watching.
