Speak for yourself.
It is quotes like the one below that provide the proof for me. The stupidity of this is Kiffin's implication that USC might be more powerful than the NCAA (maybe that is not what he meant, but it can certainly be perceived that way by those who count at the NCAA). I am sure this will help with the appeal:
"As you guys heard from our university earlier today, we are in the process of appealing the decisions made by the NCAA," Kiffin began. "With that, I cannot say very many things about the investigation or the decisions. But I can say this: In our mind, our fans and everyone involved in the USC program, that USC is an extremely powerful place. It's an extremely powerful university. It's an extremely powerful football program. USC has gone through a lot before. As we looked over the history of things that have happened before. If you go back to 1980, USC over a four-year span had a three-year postseason ban. After that, the next season, USC went on to win the Pac-10, went on to win the Rose Bowl, and in four of the next six years went to the Rose Bowl. So USC's been through a lot before. We will continue to play championship football. We will continue to recruit the best players in America to come here."
I see your point, but it could just as easily be construed as saying "USC will rise again".
I agree, but yesterday was not the time to start crowing about how big and bad USC is. That arrogance is what brought this on in the first place. The point is that Kiffin cannot be trusted when he has to think on his feet with a microphone in his face. He simply does not have the intellectual capacity for it. It is all bravado all the time.
Its going to hurt them some....but people are acting like this is the death penalty.
Heres a look at thier recruiting since 2005
Year Class rank # of recruits
2005 #1 20
2006 #1 26
2007 #2 18
2008 #8 19
2009 #4 19
2010 #1 20
As you can see, USC usually signs smaller classes anyway. Now thats not to say that this scholarship restriction wont hurt (mostly with position depth) but they will still get thier share of high caliber players. They just have less margin for missing on players who turn out to be busts, but if its one thing most people would agree on, player evaluation is one of that staffs strengths.
I suspect the targeted audience for that was his players and recruits. They are trying to circle the wagons.
That sounds pretty real to me. People are people no matter how hard the law tries to make us behave otherwise.
Hiring CLK may well have been like pouring gas on the fire.
Others might disagree. Here is a quote from Forde's column on ESPN.com:
Hiring Lane Kiffin was not exactly a iron-willed commitment to clean living. Kiffin was on staff as an offensive assistant when Bush was being showered with agent tribute. And when Kiffin bolted Tennessee after one season, he left behind a string of secondary violations and an ongoing inquiry into some way-off-campus recruiting efforts by Orange Pride hostesses.
"You'd never get anyone [on the Committee on Infractions] to admit it, but it certainly wouldn't help them [hiring Kiffin]," said an expert on NCAA infractions cases. "He has such a reputation, it couldn't have helped."
It will be really interesting to see if he can function within the ultra-strict monitoring the AA will assign to him at USC.
I think he has some strong gameday skills, but whether they are excellent enough to overcome his now handicapped recruiting process is yet to be determined.
Take a look at what happened to Miami after a similar penalty.
exactly, this is where he's now the biggest worry. They're on probation. He can't commit numerous secondary violations anymore b/c the NCAA is watching that program for the next few years
And even considering the clown's shortcomings, very large in retrospect, he at least was a short-term respite from the "film watcher."Not everybody has the mensa like abilities to separate their allegiance to their school's football team and it's head coach like you and the other geniuses do. Personally, I supported the jerk although I was very uneasy about the way he spoke publicly and handled his coaching responsibilities simply because he was the head coach of the University of Tennessee Volunteers football team.
I agree with this 100%, especially with more gems like this coning from Laney boy:
Regardless of what happens in that appeal, we know this: SC is more powerful than anything else, Kiffin said. The university, the football program, the basketball program -- no matter what they try to do to us, it wont matter.
Is this really the message you want to be sending to the NCAA right now? This is just plain stupidity. Somebody needs to knock this idiot into next week so he will finally get it.
They had very similar sanctions. (one-year ban from postseason participation and a scholarship reduction of 31 over a three year period beginning in 1996.)
1996 9-3 Big East title no bowl per NCAA ruling
1997 5-6
1998 9-3
1999 9-4
2000 11-1 Big East title
2001 12-0 Big East title and National Championship
So they had one really bad year in the years following the NCAA sanctions. They have been on a slide since then due more to poor coaching than the NCAA ruling.
Of course Miami had Butch to guide them during those critical years after the NCAA ruling. Guess the question is.....is Kiffin Butch or Larry?

I still think USC will be a premier program when all this dust settles. I hate it, but I think it's true. Americans have short memories, and the kids they will be recruiting are just starting high school. Southern California... sun... beach... blonde wimmin... Hollywood. The only place easier to recruit for is in some rat hole in Florida.
