The brutally honest August meeting with JG.

Out of ten sacks he may hold the ball too long once or twice. The rest of them are the line. It's hilarious the JG bashers keep harping on that and ignoring the 90% of sacks that aren't his fault.
He wasn't sacked 10 times... as if the truth matters to you. He was sacked 5 times. Even assuming your "twice" claim is correct... 40% of the sacks were on him. Which probably represents an improvement.

Not all that surprising, the other two guys with little experience and playing behind the 2nd OL who were blocking guys who will be in the starting rotation this fall... took only 3 "sacks". At least one of those wouldn't have been sacks if they weren't playing "tag".

The real answer lies somewhere in the middle....

JG does have lead feet in the pocket and he holds on/takes too long to process. Some of that is on him but a lot of that has been to subpar OL, skill player, and coaching...
You'll never convince k town that JG bears any of the blame. I'd estimate close to 50/50. I wouldn't argue with someone who said it was only 30% on JG. Some of these guys will react badly at any suggestion that he doesn't read D's well or takes too long to make decisions.

His 2nd half in the O&W game was good. One of the most encouraging things I saw him do is late in the game hitting a medium depth crossing pattern.

PS- while some of these guys are all too willing to throw the OL's under the bus... those guys also played better in the 2nd half.

Chryst was awful last year outside of 1 good throw vs ETSU and a couple of good series vs Alabama when the game was already settled. When he got his most extensive playing time he was 7-19 with 2 bad interceptions vs Missouri.

So, you can’t understand why Pruitt would stick with a QB who completed 62% of his passes, had a 12-3 TD to Int ratio and beat Auburn on the road......rather than go a QB who completed 45% of his passes and hit on 7 of 23 passes to finish his career at Tennessee?

Let me guess. You also thought Will Mcbride was great in 2017 and should’ve started last year ahead of JG rather than being the 4th string QB
Anyone who took time to watch Chryst's Stanford games... knew he wasn't the answer.

McBride was a head scratcher even in Jones' system.

All that said... they protect JG with safe calls. That's why his "stats" look good but yards, points, and wins... don't.

JG is one of the worst QBs in UT history and has led two of the worst offenses in the history of UT.

At a certain point you need to stop making excuses and defending a player that can't perform or put up touchdowns.

JG has potential if they can speed him up. Chaney is as good as there is at diagnosing problems, finding strengths, and building players and O's.

I've been as hard on JG as anyone around... but I remember Bray (correction: It was AInge) in 2005 and Crompton in 2008. He's been protected by conservative playcalling and schemes but he's not worse than those guys were in those years. Both were turned around by good OC's in the following year.

I specifically remember Ainge being awful in the 2006 O&W game. Crompton looked good. A lot of folks including me thought JC had caught Ainge and couldn't figure out why Cut hated JC so bad.

When fall came and they tailored the O down to the things they did well... Ainge shredded a very good Cal team. My hope is that this will be JG's story after this year.

JG has to get better. Guys who claim there is no scenario where he gets replaced are badly mistaken. If he doesn't speed up his decision making and improve his reads then he will become progressively vulnerable and especially if the Vols are losing while the O is still anemic. But there is a significant gap between JG and the other two right now.

Didn’t we rank in the top 10 of most attempts of over 25 or more yards last year and pretty close to the bottom in completion %? I think we did, regardless that has to stop. We have to play higher percentage football. We had one of the worst averages out of 129 teams in plays of lost yards.
JG is better than we give him credit for in a lot of respects. That said, he holds the ball too long. He just does. He tries to win the game sometimes with every throw.

In the immortal words of Crash Davis -“Don’t think, you can only hurt the ballclub.” When he doesn’t think and just throws he’s good. He throws a great seam route ball. It’s definitely not all his fault, but he can’t keep holding the ball like he has.
Quick throws, high percentage plays to DWA, hitch routes to JJ, Calloway, Palmer and high low them, then take your shot downfield. Consistently being at 2nd and 5 or 6 is a whole helluva lot more manageable than what we’ve been doing.

The sacks are just a anall part of the issue. Holding onto the ball means missed opportunities, which means our passing game ranked about 95th. It also clearly indicates a lack of confidence and why JG misses so many open receivers. These are common consistent criticisms of JG by coaches, media and football experts. It's not just us. And the talent around him is a lot better than what he delivers.

The wide receivers getting a bit of separation might help this problem as well
Receivers should be open by scheme in the quick passing game. Using different route combinations to attack specific defensive alignments should be our focus. Receivers aren't going to beat their match up and get separation every play.

How many times have you said this to people?

you don't have to get so mad every time someone disagrees with your opinion.

I think that our QB has matured enough to have this meeting in August.
Where after about two weeks, CJP and the offensive assistants sit down with JUST JG.
They then tell him (especially Chaney and Weinke) what they see as his strengths and weaknesses.
The rest of the staff will then talk about their positions strengths and weaknesses.
This is most important about Will Friend.
He needs to say where there is any improvement or decline in pass or run blocking, depth etc.

Then, Pruitt and Chaney will tell him with all of that taken into consideration, here is our plan of attack to try to maximize our strengths and hide our weaknesses.

Now, if Trey Smith cant play and Wanya and Wright aren’t ready for SEC competition as freshman, the brutally honest talk from Friend to JG might not be too pleasant. He might say, dude you’re gonna have to make a lot of plays are on your own and do it quickly or he might say that his group is much better at either run or pass blocking. Hopefully, they help him get better at the internal clock in his head of knowing when to expect the rush to be there.

Should be an interesting fall. I do expect Chaney to be a big help to JG.

If Chaney knows how to get the stretcher on the field ASAP, he WILL be a big help to JG.
