Would you be for Bruce Pearl's return if Martin is fired after next year?

That's what our compliance office and a good lawyer is for.....I don't care who we hire but if he goes to Georgia and they start kicking our a@@ bc of some kind of ethical stand. I'm going to be one pissed off UT fan.

Georgia won't have a vacancy.

And you are making the assumption that he will. What's to say any other coach they hire won't do anything wrong? I would say we have a better chance with Pearl walking a fine line since every thing he does will be scrutinized vs. A new coach.

Agree. Another question is "How logical is it to say that the coach we eventually will hire would have the same level of success as Pearl?" That's at least an equal risk (as, based on our history of hiring coaches, we haven't done such a great job).

Why? What's wrong with an ethical stand again?

Safest time to ride a plan is soon after a crash. And I admit, if we could have a 6 yr run of fun and winning and he screwed up again, it would be worth it again. Better than this crap.

Yes. Because he has.

They might not but at least we can hire someone who doesn't have a history of lying.

And I'd rather not have the NCAA breathing down the back of UT's neck.

You know what they say "High risk, high return".
Look, like I stated earlier, college basketball is a. Dirty business. We currently have one of the most ethical coaches there is and you see what that's getting us. If winning doe not matter, let's just keep Cuonzo and all sing Kum Ba Ya.

The main part of my point was getting our a&& kicked by Georgia.....name an ethical program out there....duke...no, Syracuse....no, North Carolina.....no, Kentucky.....no

Kansas. Michigan. Michigan State. Florida.

I can keep going.

Debatable.

Mears won 71% of his games, won 1 SEC title out right, and tied for two others. Never won an NCAA tourney game. I know only one team from the conference was invited but he lost to Syracuse and VMI in opening games with King and Grunfeld.

Pearl won 70% of his games against a tougher schedule, won one SEC championship, made it to a Sweet 16, elite 8, and earned the program's first ever #1 national ranking.

Pearl did more in post season, earned a higher ranking, and played against tougher schedules. As I said, it's debatable.

Haha. It won't happen again. We caught lightning in a bottle and the chance may be there to bring it back. Would be crazy not to do it.

Mears was in a tougher era than Pearl.

That's very debatable going off of stats.

Mears overall winning % at UT 71% in 15 seasons.
Tied for 1st in the SEC 2 times.
Made the NCAA tourney 3 times never getting out of the first round.
Most wins in a season was 22

Pearl overall winning % at UT in 6 season was 70%
Tied for 1st in the SEC 2 times and won it outright 1 time
Made the NCAA tourney 6 times and got to the Elite 8 once and the sweet 16 twice.
Most wins in a season was 31.

Hilarious comment. Mears early years were when most of the SEC schools did not care about basketball. UGA issued a press release where their head basketball coach was "promoted" to defensive coordinator of the football team.

Wrong try again.....Kansas, michigan, and Florida all have history of improprieties and I'm pretty sure mich state does too.....just bc nothing has come out recently does not mean everything is 100% ethical......I would guess there is no schools 100% ethical...it is what major college athletics have become unfortunately.

One word: Kentucky.

Plus I was referring more to the fact it was a tougher era to make the tourney.

Hence the lack of SEC titles.

Nice post.

Plus, Mears didn't have to coach under the same sort of regulatory environment that we have now. Heck ... he had a guy practically living in New York stalking Ernie while he was in high school. Do we even get Ernie or Bernie to visit TN in this day and age? Very doubtful.

I'm talking about now.

Mears was in a tougher era than Pearl.

To me , Pearl was a Mears clone. Definitely the two best eras of UT basketball. A lot easier these days with 68 teams in the tourney vs. 16 and 24 when Mears coached and had first round games vs. Teams like Syracuse. With that said, he was loaded with talent the year he had King, Grunfeld, Jackson, Johnson and Darden.

Nothing wrong with an ethical stand. However, Pearl was given a harsh sentence for a minor transgression. Pearl's bosses also lied when they said Pearl had their full support in 2010. Jimmy Cheek and Mike hamilton most likely lied because telling the truth would have hurt ticket sales in 2010-2011. Should Jimmy Cheek be fired because of his lies?

He was given a fair sentence.

Actually they both planned on keeping Pearl originally.

Where are the violations? Where are the show clauses?

You know as well as I do the NCAA protects certain programs like these mentioned along with KY, UNC and Duke. All college coaches push the envelope and most participate in the same thing Pearl did ( BBQ) or worse and get away with it.

Maybe.

They definitely don't lie about it.
