The Bruce Pearl Thread

Would you be for Bruce Pearl's return if Martin is fired after next year?

It would be foolish. Tennessee was a solid program under Majors.

Pearl didn't build Tennessee basketball but he certainly resurrected it from the dead.

I don't understand the need to try and belittle what he accomplished. Pearl had a great run and I wish he hadn't screwed up and was still here. His tenure was the most fun I've had watching the Vols since the childhood memories I posted above. I don't hold any contempt for him like some do.

Well said. Was simply a fun time and is missed. Don't know why it can't be that simple.

Just the other night, Freak Jr. and I were watching the comeback overtime win against Texas (gotta love YouTube). Man, I miss Chris Lofton. The shot he hit over Durant was legendary. And the atmosphere at TBA that day was electric.

Who's trying to belittle him? I said he didn't build Tennessee basketball, that's the truth, not belittling him.

Nobody has ever said Pearl sucked, that they hated his tenure, or that basketball was miserable while he was here. It seems like if you have the stance that he's never coming back you're somehow some Pearl Hater, and that shouldn't be the case.

I have multiple signed pictures still up in my game room with Pearl, Tony Jones, Steven and many other players/coaches from that era. I don't hate any of them, but because I realize he's not coming back and support our current coach I'm labeled as the leader of the Anti-Pearl Clan.

I was there for that one. Almost at the very top row of TBA, but that was the best game I've ever attended, unreal comeback.

Neither do I. If Martin gets fired, I want a HC that can make Men's Basketball fun and relevant again. If that's not Pearl then it better be someone with the qualities of a showmanship who will be similar to Pearl or Mears.

My belittling comment wasn't directed at your post about Mears. Just speaking in general.

Having a full house with wings and beer watching us at #1 Memphis, highstepping and high fiving friends, friends wives, friends wives recently divorced girlfriends, ass slappin my wife or whomever was close after a big shot.
A lot to miss. A lot to miss.

I don't think any of those things make you a Pearl hater. I don't think he's coming back and I'm certainly not a Pearl hater.

We all want the same thing (I hope), and that's for Tennessee basketball to be successful. I truly don't care if it's Martin, Pearl, Sparty, MC, or Phil Jackson...just as long as we are good.

Whoever is coach will get my support, but no coach is bigger than the program, and that's what gets my full support.

I took Freak Jr and we went to meet the team after the Memphis win. I almost got run over by JP Prince, but it was fun nonetheless. :)

I moved to Connecticut for a year during that season, but watched every game. I sprinted out of the apartment I lived in and proceeded to probably run a mile screaming, waving my hands, and ripping my shirt off. I had nobody to celebs the with as I was in UCONN country, quite the memory.

Ignorant? Lol. Many on this board probably weren't alive during the Mears era. You weren't. And I was too young to remember it.

Not knowing history is ignorant. Would you say not knowing who Abe Lincoln is would be ignorant?

No coach is bigger than the program and anyone who suggest such is silly. But just because people have fond memories of a favorite coach, it doesn't mean they love the school any less, either.

You can bring up comparisons to Mears or Jerry Green, or whomever. However, what Pearl accomplished in his time here was unprecedented and he's one of the greatest to have ever coached here. I fail to see how that's debatable.

So name the five previous coaches before Mears and tell me a bit about each one.

I know a bit about Mears and what he accomplished but I don't think those who weren't alive during his tenure and don't know much about him are ignorant fans. They may be ignorant of the details of Mears' tenure but I don't believe that makes them ignorant fans, as you suggested.

Jerry Green did everything Pearl did except advance one game in the tournament.

I get tired of people acting like Pearl was a top ten coach and reached the pinnacle of the sport.

Pearl was a solid coach. He did a very good job at Tennessee. I like talking about some of those memories. Pearl did a very good job his first five years here.

But just because Cuonzo isn't doing well right now doesn't mean Pearl is some sort of elite basketball coach.

Is anyone debating it?

I agree. I don't want to see Martin get fired either. I just want the Vols to win be relevant again and fill up TBA. But, if Martin is gone next season, I would prefer someone like Pearl. He made it really fun to be a BB Vol fan.

Look directly above you.

I dont think Z is debating it, he's saying he's not some top 10 coach and he got one game further than Green. I don't see anywhere in his post that he says Jerry Green was better than Pearl, do you?

If you asked Z straight up, who's the best basketball coach Tennessee has ever had,
I'm guessing he would say Pearl.

So making the elite 8 for the first time in school history, holding the longest home winning streak in school history, and being the first coach to lead TN to a #1 ranking falls short of elite to you?
