The Bruce Pearl Thread

Would you be for Bruce Pearl's return if Martin is fired after next year?

If they had done a hell of a job, improved my business upon their return, and had paid their penalty. Yes I would rehire them

Then you and I will just have to agree to disagree. I think that logic is nuts. Something along the lines of "fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me."

Name one coach that's ever lied to the NCAA and landed a program on probation that's then gotten a second chance right back where he got in trouble. There's just no way the AD can do that.

Also, people seem to only think of the Pearl days in terms of his first couple of years when we were running all the time. His last couple of seasons, the offense, and especially his lack of ever having a PG, looked similar to what we saw last night. I loved the success under Pearl, but people need to stop acting like he's the only guy that knows how to coach and elevating him to John Wooden status.

Name one President who was so unqualified and in four years put our country further in debt than the previous President, yet he was re elected by a landslide???

That was a first!!!!

There was a time when no NFL team ever qualified as a wild card, then won the SuperBowl, but Oakland did it and Pittsburgh did it.

That was a first!!!!!

Prior to 2003, no African-American coach had ever coached his team to win the SuperBowl. Indy did it against Chicago.

That was a first!!!!

First's are broken all of the time, so if your reasoning for Pearl not being re hired at U.T. is that it hasn't happened in the past, then that is a very weak reason.

He won't get re hired at U.T. but the reason will be that Martin will still be the coach here until 2015. Martin will lead us to the N.I.T. again this season with a 1st round loss, then he will coach in 2015. At the end of the 2015 season, he will lose his job. By then, Pearl will be hired elsewhere.

It's just not right to mention to mention Jerry Green's name in the same sentence with Pearl. No similarities there whatsoever.

Both Green & Pearl took us to the NCAA; whereas Martin hasn't. Not sure if Kevin O Neil did or not......

Similarities is that Pearl & Green took our teams to the NCAA....

I can assure you of this. There a number of very high boosters that would support BP very hard if this job comes open. That's 100% accurate.

How the administration would handle that I don't know but to say its laughable would be claiming big money can't matter
Big money may decide Martin's fate but it won't have a say in his repalcement.

Sometimes, things aren't done for the first time because everybody realizes it's not a good idea.

No, I think you are wrong. He admitted it only after the photo evidence was revealed.

No it is not. The photo was presented to him and he was caught off guard. Said he didn't know where it was taken. Then afterward he called Hammy and told him he needed to speak to the ncaa again to correct the statement.

Green had the most talent that UT has had since the Ernie and Bernie days. O'Neill left him an absolute gold mine,

WTF is wrong with you? The dude is not our coach and is not coming back so what gives? You are either crazy or really believe this AD would actually hire back a guy that got a show cause and got our program put on probation. I don't agree with the penalties (most don't) but it is what it is. Why is it so hard to accept this? I don't understand.

It's impossible to accept this because Pearl is a proven big time winner and an inspiring personality who didn't do anything so bad that he doesn't deserve a 2nd chance. He also led this program to the greatest heights in its entire 100+ year history.

Couple that with the fact that our current coach has more than proven that he can't win here plus he is more uninspiring than a box of rocks. He's a good man, but just can't get the job done.

Winning is the bottom line. We need a winner as coach. Does that sum it up enough for you?

Name all the great guards Pearl had other than Lofton, Smith and Watson who he inherited. It was a parade of Ramar Smith, Bobby Maze, Trae Golden and JP Prince types that could do certain things but were maddeningly inconsistent.

I never said great - I said Pearl had better guard play than CCM - that is all.

I understand some mistakes don't deserve a second chance. His mistake wasnt one of them after paying his penalty IMO

And Pearl is the ONLY coach in America that can make Tennessee a winner again? Is that what your saying? Basically.

I miss his explosvie style on offense but besides being a fun guy and being passionate, I didn't care that much for Pearl. His defense was horrible and we didn't have a half court game. If we wasn't turning people over or pushing the ball constantly, we wasn't scoring. I don't think his style of play is suitable for good guard play.

FTR, I'm not comparing Martin and Pearls coaching style. I'm just simply asking why people can't let it go. Surely people don't think he's really going to get a job offer from Tennessee if Martin doesn't work out.
Pearl's elite 8 team was an adjustment to his style. They did play half court, did not press, had good gaurd play, and a lot of success. Pearl adjusted to his roster, which impressed me. I honestly thought he was a one trick pony. He wasn't.

People can't let it go, because up to this point the new coach has not impressed. Pearl played an incredible schedule and led UT to some of the biggest wins in the history of the program. He took UT bball out of misery and made it a national contender. In contrast, CCM has a super dull personality, and has missed the tourney. There is zero in his track record to indicate he will ever be anything other than middle of the road.
I'm not going to judge the season on one game, but he has a weak schedule, and the team doesn't appear to have any offensive plan or continuity. And we haven't even discussed free throw shooting?

Also, many believe Pearl was blind sided by the UTAD. They threw him under the bus and then backed it over him. Pearl's penalty was way over the top.

So, until CCM or another coach get results, some of us will continue to lament Pearl's absence.

Pearl loves the UT fans, but would not come back if asked. There are still some elements in the AD that he resents. In spite of that, Pearl has continued to speak favorably of his time at UT. He is now a TV personality and he will likely be back in coaching soon.

The only thing about Pearl I didn't care for was his relationship with Tony Jones. That guy is sketchy.

Nope, but he is a PROVEN commodity. We KNOW he can win here. Anybody else would be a crap shoot. Why bet on the unknown when we can have a sure thing? That would make no sense whatsoever.

Pearl has demonstrated that he can take a mediocre roster, such as the one he inherited from Buzz, and turn it into an NCAA program. He could do the same now.

Yes, Pearl made a big mistake. He panicked and lied about a secondary violation, but that is nothing for which he can't be forgiven and given a 2nd chance, as soon as the show cause penalty term expires.

How big does it need to be? We can all rattle off names from the past 20 years of guys that got caught cheating and had to go somewhere else. If you fired your accountant for getting in trouble with the IRS, would you be the one to rehire him?

Good example. It is too bad for TN. Pearl will likely get a good job at a rival school and lead them to conference championships and consistent NCAA berths. We will be forced to watch it happen. It is what it is though. TN cannot re-hire Pearl after his infractions - Just can't do it.

Things probably worked out in Pearl's favor. He will work again. Had he stayed I believe he would have traveled down the Fulmer path. As witnessed here he is still and will always be a cult hero. His program was already on the decline and the Pearl era would have ended just as the Fulmer era did.

The strange is that the alleged decline per your statement above was better than what CCM has done at UT.
