The Bruce Pearl Thread

Would you be for Bruce Pearl's return if Martin is fired after next year?

You may be correct, but U.T. also made a profit from him being the coach.

More seats in TBA! More souvenirs being sold. Better air time on t.v., rather than our game tucked away at an odd time on Fox Sports South, we had prime time ESPN.

This all added $$ to U.T., of course some of it went to Bruce's salary and performance bonuses. However; U.T. basketball was finally profitable, after years of not making much profit......

You do know that no matter where or what time UT plays they get the same TV money, right?

I had season tickets when Coach Pear was here. Dropped them when coach Martin was hired. Nothing against Coach Martin but Coach Pearl left a lot of excitement left with him. I can understand peoples dislike of Coach Pearl with what he did and how he handled it. I just can't get as excited about UT basketball right now. It takes a very special coach to be successful at UT. He has to be a good coach but also be somewhat of a showman. I hope Coach Martin gets it done but if he doesn't I wouldn't mind seeing Coach Pearl back. Probably will never happen but I wouldn't mind it.

I can't access this forum from the basketball forum anymore. I had to go to my posts to get here. Anybody know why?

Bruce isn't gonna be here next year, and the you truly believe he is just makes you look beyond ignorant. I can understand the love for him, and people wishing he was here, but most realize that's simply not going to happen.

You'll never get through to him. You are talking to a man that still worships Fulmer and thinks we never should've gotten rid of him.

The guy has been nothing but a UT ambassador since the incident. Any chance that if Cuonzo doesn't make a major improvement next year that Hart brings back Pearl?

My initial reaction is no way in hell.... but this situation clearly has no precedent.

It comes up in almost every thread after a loss. It's not going to happen.

hahahhaha - well that's not surprising now that you say it.

I like cuonzo - I just really miss the day when we were nationally relevant. I think Cuonzo can keep us in the top half of the SEC, but never into the top 10 like Bruce did.

i think cuonzo is a pretty good coach. i know this season is disappointing because with stokes and mcrae, this should be a tournament team. especially, in a league this weak.

but, i wouldn't pass judgment on him yet

But the series changed from fiery to wildfire in 1988. Former Iowa assistant Bruce Pearl secretly taped Thomas admitting he was offered $75,000 and a new car by Illinois assistant coach Jimmy Collins. Pearl turned over the tape to NCAA officials, but the ensuing investigation netted no Illinois sanctions for that incident. However Illinois was banned from the NCAA tournament for one year for other infractions discovered in the investigation.
Bruce Pearl lied to the NCAA. (Karma?)
Great personality and marketing skills, shows passion, but possibly inflated ego problems.
I totally enjoy him on tv and Sirrius Radio...and that's where he needs to remain.

all you have to do is have descent big men and a couple of guys who can score like loften .peoplee say mcbee is a great shooter but he shoots around 32 percent .that is awful a good shooter shoots closer to 40 or better.

Yep, which is exactly why we should keep him. If we fire him and hire someone else, there is a good chance it will be Wade Houston v2.0 Look, I miss Pearl and Fulmer, but we've got to move on and try to get out of the wilderness.

Guess you miss Fulmer too!:hi:

I think he's a decent coach, just not the recruiter pearl was. But with a veteran team and two years in which the team did nothing but improve as the season went along, hopefully we can have a better overall showing next year and get some upper echelon recruits as well.

The Vols get into the dance and make some noise this thing goes away. Accolades are thrown CCM's way especially if everyone returns especially Stokes & Mcrae. NIT invited and these boards either fill up negatively or everyone begins raving about the upcoming football recruiting class. Take your pick or both.

This^^^^ Pearl was arguably the greatest coach in our program and to compare all of our coaches to him is dumb. It's like UCLA trying to find Wooden again. Not going to happen. Not only that but Martin inherited a program on probation and NO returning starters. Then his best leader is out this year.

People, it is dumb to compare. We want to succeed but be careful what you wish for.

Close to zero here because of how ugly the divorce was; higher at some other school perhaps

ZERO CHANCES OF THAT EVER HAPPENING unless it is to honor one of his former players in a half-time presentation.
