The school doing the hiring is only subject to the original penalty given to the coach - the penalty follows the coach!!!!! So the hiring institution would be hiring a coach - in this example Bruce Pearl - who could not recruit til the expiration of his penalty (the show cause)!!!!

I can understand why some fans would want Pearl back here. He is an energetic coach that brought this program to a level never seen before in UT basketball history. Coach Ray Mears did also and both coach"s teams always gave solid efforts on the court.

Right now, CCM is our coach so support him and this team. Pearl"s time in the NCAAs jailhouse in up in September 2014. Which means any job he would possibly take would be April 2015. So why the discussion now.

Yesterday, don't know who heard him on 104.5, but he was very straight forward about his status. Avoided any questions, about the Tennessee team but stated his love for coaching. The crew tried to bait him several times and he talked around all of it well.

A lot of things can happen between now and never never land. Regardless, Any discussion is too premature, disrespectful to our current coach, and sets all of us for disaster.

I hate the NCAA, Congress is a model of them, as an authority of power they got this right regarding Pearl because he committed a major violation. Was the punishment warranted? Yes. To harsh? Maybe. Selective in nature? More than likely. Did he commit the offense? Yes. Is he a good coach? Yes Will he coach again? Yes. Will it be at UT? No way to tell, way to early, plus there may not be a vacancy.

I understand the love affair with Pearl, it's extreme in some cases. At this point for all concerned, it is totally disrespectful to the current coach staff and players by doing so.

Let this go. Yes I was impressed with the way he handled the interview, but I was not impressed with the way he handled the most important interview of his coaching career. Plus the NCAA is a piss poor governing body.

Everything the NCAA does is actionable by law. Texas A&M is the first one to really go back at them and we know what happen as a result of that threat.

This is the last time I am linking an article stating that a school hiring Pearl could face additional penalties. This time I will link from NCAA's website.

The show-cause order means that Pearl is prohibited from engaging in recruiting activity for three years at any NCAA member school. Any school wanting to hire him must go before the NCAA to explain why and could face penalties.

I don't recall a lot of respect being uttered towards Pearl when he was still coaching here the last year.

So this is from NCAA.com. The operative word is "COULD." You'll notice in the first sentence that is say's Pearl IS prohibited.

What that means is that Pearl IS prohibited from recruiting AND any school that hires Pearl would go before the NCAA and COULD face additional penalties.

The key word is could, but, to a school that has done nothing wrong penalizing them for making a hire is actionable at law.

and the AA site article does not say what your other quote from another article says. the AA press release simply lays-out the penalties given and the self imposed penalties. the "could" is if there are new violations....

And frankly any other NCAA rules violations at the hiring institution could and most likely would result in some major penalties to that member institution.

you guys have fun with this debate - i have other matters to attend to....

the bottom line is that Pearl will not be "hired" to coach college bball until his show cause expires in august 2014. but if he so decides then we will see him back coaching again. the guy is a winner - plain and simple - and will win again at another program if gets back in the coaching profession.

I agree. Pearl just got caught in one of those NCAA moments because of Calhoun at UCONN. Remember Tark and these famous words? " The NCAA is so mad at Kentucky right now they will probably give Creighton two more years of probation."

Anytime you have an emotional drama unfolding in front of you eyes, words are going to be said both good and bad. By fans and media.

Add to it, timing could not have been worst with UTK athletics being extremely drama filled and volatile, Kiffin and crew, CPS condition coming to the forefront, Hamilton,
Dooley experiment and on and on.

The only thing we had was Men's Basketball and guess what, it went poof? For a moment. Pearl is a tough act to follow, but CCM is the coach with that job.

All of these were self inflicted wounds with the exception of Coach Summit's condition.
