Shoop developed his reputation using disguise and deception. Never having the luxury of working with top athletes, Shoop's approach is to disguise blitzes and do things that are not expected. He has always been able to do more with less.

The question remains: How will Shoop perform with some of the best athletes in the country?

In search for an answer, I was impressed with Shoop's comments in SEC Country (by Mike Griffith):

"...Shoop said his defense will be “aggressive” and loaded up to stop the run, looking to improve on last season’s 151.6 yards per game allowed (45th in the country)..."

“...I like thinking outside of the box,” Shoop said, “but I don’t want to go one step back to go two steps forward...”

“...We’ll create a closer’s mentality, and a key to that is the chemistry we have in our defensive staff room..."

“...It’s a diverse room [defensive coaches], and we all bring a different skill set to the table and our own unique things...”

The real elephant in the room is a different stat. Last year, we allowed 18 fourth down conversions. We did allow 151.6 rushing yards per game, but we gave up 210.4 yards passing, so I would guess that most of these fourth down conversions were pass completions.

Last year, after the Florida game, the press was critical of a few coaching decisions. In Dan Wolken's USA Today article, Dan wrote:

"...After the game, Jones defended his decision to go for the extra point, saying he referred to a chart that's "standard" in football..."

"...If that's what the chart says, light it on fire. How about using your brain once in awhile?"

So, how will Shoop perform with some of the best athletes in the country?

When we face the first fourth and long, and Butch's chart (card) says rush three and drop the state into zone, and with the secondary coaches giving that 1000-mile stare, I think I'll have my answer.

Shoop has been on the job too long to be guessing about stuff concerning our defense. Other than that sounds like a plan. I've always got what Butch said wrong, I always heard as if he went against the chart because he felt that our defense was good for another stop and the defense would win the game. Boy was he wrong. After they scored putting them down by 6, he still thought we had enough points. Wrong again.

I think if our offense stays aggressive and executes properly, never let off the gas until the game is won, this will be a special year.

Honestly it looks like CBJ has passed ownership of the team to his Coaches and Captains, no doubt in my mind the team is in better hands. Thanks Butch for creating this beast, A Vol Beast.

15-0. Book em, Danno!

I recall last year that Butch misread" The Card." The card that the NFL and NCAA coaches use said that he should have gone for 2 in that situation. The card was right but Butch must have misread it in the heat of the moment.

The lesson? Get off THE CARD's back!

That's worse. Not being able to read a chart is an indication.

Get it together Butch.

With regards to your last paragraph, I can't imagine that Butch would fire Jancek, bring in Shoop and pay him $1mm+ only to dictate to him that he do the exact same things defensively that got him a ton of national criticism and cost him 2 crucial losses last year.

Whether it was all on Jancek or whether Butch fired Jancek to use him as the fall guy, Jones has to turn Shoop loose and get the hell out of his way this year....otherwise the ish storm he'll endure this year will make last year look like child's play. I personally think he'll get out of the way and let Shoop be Shoop....and ride his much improved defense all the way to Atlanta in early December.

Jones didn't get involved with defense until after the Arky game. Janceks fate was sealed at that point.

Yeah we had some breakdowns last year but our defense was still pretty good. Jancek didn't get fired because of anything that happened on the field it was because of off the field stuff.

The affair didn't help and bringing her around was a really bad move. But make no mistake, the collapses is what ultimately cost him.
Jones got a LOT more involved in the defensive side of the ball post Arky game.

I'm not arguing your point, just curious. How do you know this? Was it reported on? I guess I just don't remember reading anything about that.

Wrong

Razor is right.

Having said that, Butch grabbed the opportunity to hire what we all believe will be an even better DC.

But it wasn't on-field performance that won Jancek the pink slip.

I read an article where Jaylen Reeves-Maybin asked Shoop what he would've done on the 4th and 14 against Florida and Shoop said he would've pressured... I like that approach, but Jancek's call wasn't wrong either, it just wasn't executed. If we're in phase (proper position) in the secondary, that play doesn't happen. What I'm most concerned about is how we were able to move the ball well in the first half, but then were stuffed in the 2nd half in various games. It wasn't because our offense went into a shell and became conservative, it was because other teams adjusted. Hopefully, our talent will prevail this year.

We were inventing ways to lose games. We have turned the corner.

See you inTampa.

Our inability to make halftime adjustments or respond to another team's adjustments is what shot ourselves in the foot last year. We went into the locker room against Oklahoma with all the momentum and managed to come out looking like they never even left the field.

So many games last year had us starting out very slow in the 2nd half, whether that was giving up points on the opponents opening drive or failing to move the ball at all right out of the gate. I don't expect an opening drive touchdown every single time, but I can remember numerous times we would go 3 and out or make only one first down before having to punt the ball away.

I really hope this year our coaching and in-game decision making improves. In my opinion, that is the only thing potentially holding us back from an 11-1 season. Right now, coaching blunders included, I still think we lose 2 games this year during that brutal 4-game gauntlet. But, if the coaches can get out of their own way and prove they have grown, I think we can go 11-1 and make some serious noise. But that is a HUGE if.

Naming year long Captains and telling them to "Own it", is the coaches getting out of the way.

See you in Tampa.
