The biggest disappointment...

Things did fall apart. I would like to sit in the conference room with Dooley and the guys and see why they think it did. I have to think that it was the depth....that we were so gassed that we couldn't do anything but the most basic plays....but I don't know that.

Compared to what we got from the coaches in 2005 and 2008, tonight's performance was award worthy. The players need reps. The game was lost. Run plays that the team is going to need to be able to run over the next 10 (hopefully 11) games.

Sorry VolNation Regulars

I don't have an sexy avatar or any cute logos. I'll try to get my computer savvy son to help me there.

I was born in Knoxville, am a prisoner or war in Alabama, and bleed ORANGE from even a paper cut. Dad went to UT Martin, my sister & brother in law went to UT.

So I'm an old time UT guy - Neyland Scholar from the early 70's - classmate of Ernie Grunfeld, Mickey Marvin and Stanley Morgan. I knew all three, and other Vol Greats.

I can't help but believe they feel much like we all do. The kids played hard. The coaches quit.

The season's not over, and I think the kids have the talent and fortitude to play much better, and maybe pull an upset or two somewhere.

But I am disturbed that I saw our new coaching staff roll over. Go into a spread. Throw passes all around. Run reverses. Blitz. Do something other than run standard palys, punt and wait fort hem to show mercy.

I'm sure there are many of you great and special writers on the site who will jump on the opportunity to attack my thoughts, just as you do many others.

But I am, and will be, a Vol forever. I've been an avid fan since the mid 60's - watching every broadcast I can. Listening on the radio wherever I might be. I didn't turn it off tonight, and will be screaming for and with our team next week.

But despite that, I'm dissapointed that our coaches quit. No matter what walk of life you are in, or our players move to, that will never suffice.

Go Vols.
I too am a Vol trapped in Alabama. I travel to He!! (Tuscaloosa)once a week for my company and often still wear my orange cap.

HOWEVER, how can you blame the coaches for that mess. Dooley was right. Oregon figured out our running game in the 2nd Q. We were one dimensional all game. They stacked the line, put pressure on Simms to make plays, and capitalized on every mistake. Simms looked confused and made some terrible decisions tonight throwing into coverage. It didnt helo that our O line let anybody that wanted to take a free shot at Simms. Did we check out of a play all night? No. Cause Simms cant manage the game yet.

How is that the coaches fault?

We're going to fade in the second half a lot this year. It has nothing to do with "quitting" or "heart"; it has to do with our horrific lack of depth. We are like a I-AA team or a team on probation, numbers-wise.

How dare you use logic on this message board tonight.

I was actually a little surprised that it took as long as it did for Oregon to break a long run. You just knew it was only a matter of time.

I thnk we lost our fire to compete at that high of a level when we got behind early in the 3rd Q.

Whatever you wanna call it, we had a chance to get back in the ballgame down 14 in the 3rd and just looked lost and down (emotionally), not tired.
Ahh is that what the players told all you know it alls, you all kill me with this sh*t, acting like you know exactly what happened how they were feeling and thinking. We got beat by a good team with lots of experience and depth, something we do not have this year but will in a few. The haters need to go to bed.

Thats exactly right. We are pretty much where Alabama was during their probation.

Where were the passes over the middle? They could have hit a few slants because the strong safety was coming off the edge all night. Once Oregon figured out Poole-off-tackle, the offense seemed lost. And when you can't hold on to the ball and keep it out of Oregon's hands, well, you get 48 points scored on you.

A little creativity on offense in the second half would have gone a long way.

Dooley extremely disappointed because he said the Vols basically gave up after Simms' pick-6. "You'd have thought we were down 40."

Once the tackling got sloppy in the third quarter you knew it was over. Fatigue makes cowards of us all.

I shudder to think what Marcus Lattimore is going to do running between the tackles against us in the second half of that game.

I shouldn't be surprised anymore by stupidity on VolNation but I am still a little surprised to see people blame this solely on the coaches. Coaches don't arm tackle, overpursue, and miss coverage assignments. Coaches can only preach discipline so much until it falls squarely on the players' shoulders to execute. I agree, the team did look overwhelmed after Oregon hit their stride on offense. And of course, we are a little handcuffed on offense again...sadly.

I can't say for sure that nobody quit, but at the end of the day we were playing with about 17 less scholarship players against the #7 team in the country. The math just doesn't work.

Some may have quit, but don't mistake being dog tired and maybe demoralized for flat out quitting.

Well said. We have little depth, if any.

How can I say he coaches were at fault?

Because I spent about 15 years coaching youth league basketabll, soccer, baseball and gisrls' softball.

And whenever we lost, and particularly when we lost in a poor fashion, I knew it wasn't because of the kids. It was because I didn't prepare them right, or didn't make the right adjustments, or didn't train or condition them enough, or just made bad decisions.

My team was my team. I was supposed to prepare them and put them in a position to do their best. If I didn't, and they played as well as they could and still lost, it was my fault.

And I did that for free.

That rain delay did us in. If we didn't have that it would be 60-0.

Seriously we were lacking in depth and gassing.

Your experience coaching girls' softball is exactly the same thing as professional college coaches trying to beat a top 10 team with a woefully depleted roster. Thank you for your valuable coaching insight.
