The Beginning of the End for Dooley

and the kissing your sister quote was made by bear brant about another game. had nothing to do with tennessee or bill battle. nice fairy tale story you got there but it's all bull crap.

winsec... The statement was made by Coach Bill Battle. He MAY have said the same comment Bryant had made at sometime, but I remember Battle making the statement too! I wish I had a recording of the TV/radio post-game interview and the newspaper clippings with his statement, but I don't. I distinctly remember watching the game, and watching the post-game at my friend's house in Cleveland, TN. Now, either you were too young at the time to remember it clearly, or you are like me, and forget a few things in your old age... WHATEVER... GO VOLS!!!

Wrong game winsec, I'm talking about the game where Battle went for it instead of kicking a field goal for the tie. Do you not remember Battle saying, "I felt like going for a tie is like kissing your sister, so we went for it..."??? I remember him saying that as clear as if it were yesterday, instead of around forty years ago. I think may have been the season before he was fired...

And, I do remember the game against Georgia with the fake punt... and I remember the sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach as I watched the play unfold... thinking, "He's gone..."

And, I forgot that UT did win his first game against BAMA, thnks for the reminder. However, his youth and lack of experience helped account for his aggressiveness and SOMETIMES not-so-good decisions.

I liked Battle, and thought that if he had had some more time... well, that didn't happen.

you are clueless about all of the above. battle played georgia twice in his tenor. beat then 14-0 in 1972 in athens. NOTICE NO FIELD GOALS. then lost to them in 1973 35-31. the fake punt game. seriously...who are you and what team are you a fan of?

Kentucky + Florida + MSU = Lost hope. Beating Georgia would have gone a long ways in restoring some confidence, but at this point I just don't see Dooley as successful here.

You were what... 14 - 15 at the time? And you expect everyone to believe that you just happen to remember all those "facts" you keep spewing??? Hmmm... I was a UT freshman at the time... and was drafted into the military in August, and reported for active duty in October of 72.

So, you want to know who I am and what team I support? I am an alum of the University of Tennessee, a fan of The University of Tennessee and have been since I was old enough to yell "GO VOLS!!!", a retired veteran of the United States Army, and hold a bachelors and three masters degrees. Well, that pretty well sums up who I am.

I think I see why AD Dave Hart isn't answering your e-mails......

But, I do thank you for your service!

The beginning of the end for Derek......?

When Hammy sent him a text asking if he would be interested in the UTK job. He should have said, "No Hammy, I need to first prove that I can win at La Tech."

I don't know how this many people are saying they lost hope last year. During the offseason there were countless people on here thinking we'd pull a few upsets and have a shot at the NCG.

I'd say we all had pretty good faith in him rebuilding until Kentucky last year.

TERRIBLE

First use of the phrase "A tie is like kissing your sister" goes to....

The unpopularity of ties in American sports is reflected in the saying, "A tie is like kissing your sister." The earliest known use of the phrase was by Navy football coach Eddie Erdelatz after a scoreless tie against Duke in 1953.

It was Kentucky for me. I blame that on the coaches.

The team as a whole was obviously not prepared to play. No need for details here. The coaches should have found a way to get the team up for that game.

It was obvious bray was not playing well and reports say he had the flu or something.

A good coach should change the qb and the game plan as a whole to find a way to win.

This year they still can't line up right or tackle well. Poor clock management is an ongoing issue.

There is still a lack of quality depth but we have enough to be 6-1 or 5-2 right now.

If this staff wins out and looks good doing it Ill get in board again but until then I'm hoping for a new head coach/oc/dc.

Dooley's fate is not sealed. Dooley's fate is still in his own coaching hands. He's only one big win away from getting some positive momentum, after having to fight an uphill battle. I actually have to give him credit for holding things semi-togehter, and not quitting through all of the bad things that have happened to this team over the last 3 years. I do think he is running out of chances to get that big win. This weekend is the perfect opportunity for him to do just that.

Exactly!

LSU of 2010? No way that was the beginning of the end; if anything it was proof that Dooley might be able to get it done, in the sense that UT should have won the game.

It was when he was hired.....he has never been fully embraced by the fan base....if he had been a big name hire I think everyone would have had a little more patience

I saw title, immediately thought about 2010 LSU game, opened thread and was disappointed that OP was thinking the same time..

Nothing more to add.. Nice job OP - you read my mind. We must be brothers.

I don't know why we waste everyone's time with these types of post. $9.3 million to buyout the staff.......will not happen, UT does not have the $$$ and even Haslam will not step in and soften the blow. This staff is here for at least two more season. Get use to it and hope these issues are resolved and we can all look back and say, ok , maybe we were wrong.

Go Vols!!

IMO the 2010 LSU game. At the time it was considered a huge deal to lose that game but think of all the positive repurcussions a win wouldve brought to this program. Not only would it have been a signature win for Coach Dooley early in his career, but would have also boosted the confidence of future Tenn players in the belief that Dooley could get the job done. Apparently the lack of confidence in Dooley by the players has been the underlying problem with Dooley's tenure.

Had our bad luck been good luck, then we would be in much better shape.

(1) 2010 - We beat LSU and not had the referee incident.

(2) 2010 - We beat UNC and not had the referee incident.

2010 record 8 - 5 with a bowl win.....

(3) 2011 - Hunter & Bray not been injured, we beat USC & Kentucky, for a team record of 7 - 5. Then we go to a bowl game and finish the season at 8 - 5 again.

(4) 2012 - DaRick not been dismissed from the team. He is the only consistant receiver we had/have. So, with him, we would not have had so many dropped balls.
Thus, we win the UGA game and Mississippi State games.
Our record now is 5 - 2 and we are in the top #25....

I had high hopes for him as a coach in 2010. We showed improvement and looked like a fundamentally sound team. 2011 was a disaster with losing to Kentucky. We should never lose to kentucky.

What exactly has he held together?
We lost to one of the worst KY teams ever(and that's saying alot), without a true qb in the game. As I said earlier, the LSU game gave me false hope. It's also a damning indictment against him. We've gotten worse over the course of his tenure with "supposedly" better players.

No argument from me. I wasn't happy with the hire. I'm not happy with the current state of the program. But that doesn't change the reality that a win this weekend completely changes things for coach Dooley, and this team. Unlike some, I don't hope we lose this weekend so coach Dooley will lose his job, and we can get a new coach. I just can't bring myself to ever hope that the Vols lose, even to Vanderbilt, which is where I went to school. I played baseball for Vandy, and I love to see them win, but I was born a Vol fan. So I will always hope that we win the next game, no matter who the coach is, and no matter what happened last week.

It is Dave Hart's responsibility to make the best decisions for the future UT's football program. Win or lose this weekend, I would think he will still make the same decision based on who he believes will return UT to where we all want it to be. One game won't change that, but several games in a row could. Saturday is the start, and I hope we win out. I hope make it to a bowl game and win it too.

I don't expect UT to win every game. I want UT to win every games, and to be competative in the games we lose. If I were Dave hart I would expect our program to win against the top 3 teams in our conference as much as we lose to them, and anything else would be unacceptable to me.

I agree that North Carolina wasn't on Dooley or the team, but the ref's.

I don't agree with this:

1. Our defense has been bad enough to lose those games with or without Bray, Hunter, or Da'Rick, so those losses don't necessarily change.

2. Coaching lost the LSU game, because it is the coach's responsability to have the correct number of players on the field.

Ridiculous amount of assumption in all of this. You can't say for sure we beat USC in 2011 even with Hunter and Bray. And for crying out loud UK was so bad we should have beaten them anyway.

And seriously...with Rogers we beat UGA and MSU?

The Kentucky game by far is the one that will haunt him. No excuses in that one. Depth, talent, none of that can be an excuse. We should have been able to beat them with our 2nd team offense and defense. Neither our coaches nor players were prepared for that game. Ridiculous.
