The Atlanta Braves Thread

Even if Mike somehow ends up a league average hitter (and his numbers suggest that’s ridiculous to consider) his defense/base running is worth the 8/$72M alone

The crazy thing is the Braves won the World Series while Acuña was on crutches providing leverage for AA to be able to go to Harris and Riley and say “Here’s generational wealth in case your body breaks down like his just did”.
Soroka is a better example

Definitely true. These deals get characterized as highway robbery, but it’s very likely that at least 1 or 2 of them will work out big time in favor of the player… but nobody will care because 5 years from now, the economics will probably make them all even more team friendly than they even look right now.

The Acuna contract is the one that’s robbery but I will never fault anyone for turning down $100M

Mike and Riley contracts are fair given where they are in service time and age

Acuna was the youngest Big 4 athlete to get $100M guaranteed. Riley got $200M guaranteed. Olson got an excellent deal. Harris has played less than half a season and got $72M guaranteed. All of them made sense.

The Ozzie one? Now that was highway robbery.

I was super high on AA when we hired him but I’ve lost a ton of faith. The Donaldson signing, the terrible bullpen since last year, the lack of balls to pull off a trade with our prospects, plus the Carter Stewart draft pick...(a farm he didn’t built). Taking O’Day contract to give up less prospects. And then keeping crappy players for too long because of “options”. It’s been a bad few months.

The lesson, as always…I’m an idiot.

It’s crazy to think how good this group can be over the next several years. Even in the 90’s hey day of Braves baseball, we never had this kind of a foundation. We had Glavine and Smoltz, then Maddux, and eventually Chipper and Andruw. Most of the rest were interchangeable parts.

Does give me a sad that Freddie isn’t going to be here as a part of it, but the butterfly effect of him leaving might have been how Harris II, Contreras, and Grissom got here when they did.

Probably. But a career OPS+ of 105 says it may not be as bad as you think.

Even though he hasn’t been as good offensively as I hoped, that contract at the time almost caused a twitter meltdown lol. And it’s still a freakin deal. He’s put up two 4 win seasons since he signed the contract.

2 months ago he was playing for peanuts in the minors and now unless he does something stupid he won’t have to worry about money for the rest of his life. Crazy

And none of them are terrible deals. I think Olson’s deal at the end could be ugly, but even still they locked him up for his prime during a championship window. Riley/Ozzie/Ronnie/Mike all make perfect sense and none of them are so ridiculous that they should come back to haunt you. The Cubs won a World Series. Their fans wouldn’t trade it for the world. It’s gotta suck though they one got one pennant and kept none of those guys. We got four homegrown studs locked up for another five years minimum.
