Boston's been doing this act for a while now. There was the infamous 2012 season with Bobby V where they won only 69 games after having won at least 89 for the preceding 5. They followed up their 2013 WS season with 71 and 78 win seasons, and they followed up their 2018 WS season with a mediocre 84 win season last year and a terrible season this year.

He had a lower ERA and WHIP man. Do whatever math you want to predict future success, I’m with you 100%.

But looking at performance RETROACTIVELY, the only thing that actually matters is how many runs did you give up. That’s the end.

Max Fried is a better pitcher than Sean Newcomb. Sean Newcomb had a better age 25 season. Both of those things can be true. 🤯

I would disagree Sean did not have a better season at age 25 than Max at age 25. Sean did well, but Max had a better K rate, walk rate, the difference between WHIP was 0.03 and Max had a better ERA+ by 9 points. The biggest difference was in BABIP which was like 60 points in favor of Sean’s.

Not going back and forth all day, but 2018 Sean Newcomb was not better than Max Fried in any way last year

Actually the numbers in 2019 are quite impressive for Max considering his BABIP was .336 and his exit velo was pretty low.
