The Atlanta Braves (thread 1)

Seems kind of fishy that Jeff Francoeur and Andruw Jones are hitting a whole heck of a lot better after being separated from hitting coach maven Terry Pendleton.
Pendleton may be suspect . . . but those may not be good examples. Francoeur just had an 0 for 29 streak and Andruw Jones has probably hit about .220 since leaving Atlanta.

If you want to see hubris, go check out Jeff Schultz's column on ajc.com today, in which Wren basically says "Hey, it's April, why worry?" He's kidding himself. If they don't turn it around soon and start playing at least .500 ball for awhile, they're going to be in a huge hole with too many teams in front of them. And besides, this is clearly a flawed team -- I don't know how to look this up, but how many 90-win teams ever lose 8 in a row? The very fact that they've lost 8 straight means that they're probably something like 10 times more likely to be a .450 team than they are a .550 team.

Both have serious approach issues and will always be streaky.

Pendleton sucks as a hitting coach, but the struggles of those two can't be hung solely on Pendleton.

I'm just hoping the idiot doesn't adversely affect Jason Heyward's growth.

And KJ keeps rubbing it in.

Honestly though, nobody but Prado is hitting and its obvious Jair isn't himself this year.

Schultz's article in the AJC on Wren was great. Wren is only fooling himself if he thinks that there is no need to worry. There are PLENTY of reasons to worry about this team. Unfortunately, it seems as if the only two people not worrying are Wren and Cox, who thinks they've been doing some good things during an 0-8 stretch.

Well, I no longer have to explain how bad 80's braves baseball was...it's out there now for all to see.

Atlanta's biggest issue is the leadoff role. Haven't had a consistent one since Rafael Furcal.

I know they're too cheap and it's a pipe dream, but signing Carl Crawford next season would be an exceptional move. That'd be my number one priority.

And Chipper Jones is done. He's closer to a 6/7 hole hitter than a 3 at this stage.

I'd really like to see Chipper hitting either 2nd or 5th. Or just move Prado into the leadoff roll and bump the entire lineup up 1 spot.

Crawford is going to be a Yankee next year and you can book that. I have come to the conclusion that the Braves are not going to go anywhere until we get a real owner.

Agreed. Faceless corporate ownership sucks. There's no doubt that the day Ted Turner relinquished control of the Braves to AOL/Time Warner was the beginning of the end.

Hitting him in the 2 hole would be interesting. Just need to do something. Shake it up a little bit.

We have one consistent HR threat, and he's a 20 year old rookie who is prone to a case of the Ks.

Combine that with no leadoff man and you've got major issues.

Also, trading for Adrian Gonzalez would be felony stupidity.

We've already made one disastrous trade for a rental in the past 5 years. Don't need another.

How different would it be if Wren did not botch up the Furcal deal, in which he ultimately went back to the Dodgers?

Hard to blame Wren for that one. One of Furcal's agents was doing a deal with the Braves while the other one was leveraging the Dodgers.

what about this order?

Prado
Cabrera
Heyward
Jones
McCann
Glaus
Escobar
McLouth
Would you really want a guy hitting under .240 and leading the world in strikeouts hitting third? I'd leave Heyward in the 6 or 7 hole to cleanup the cleanup guys. No reason to put even more pressure on him by moving him up in the order.

When was that? Frenchy is batting near .300 and he is 22/79 during that stretch. He only had one horrific game going 0-7.

how telling is it that we are already talking about moves for next year. I also wonder what happens with bobby is gone.
