lol. I edited my comment.I’m not THAT old lol. I caught the tail end of Phil Niekro’s career.
Crazy thing about Murphy was he got traded in September. Niekro got NON-TENDERED?!lol. I edited my comment.
Chipper is the exception to the rule. Very rare to find a player that either plays his entire career for one team, or plays the majority of (and finishes) his career with the same team. Smoltz, Glavine, and Maddux were all on the tail end of their careers, best seasons behind them. I’ll include Andruw and Murph here also because they should be in the Hall. Crime Dog should be in also.
You remember when sabermetrics/analytics first started to take hold inside GM's offices - not anywhere near mainstream yet, but were first making their inroads - and all the old school guys said it was total bunk? It's now flipped and is too dogmatic the other way.
This is also seemingly why every pitcher has blown out their arm and had Tommy John by age 25. Youth baseball players now don't play any other sports and pitch (not just throw, but pitch) year-round.“Everybody got into the aging curve,” the executive said. “There was a wholesale shift toward younger players. Far fewer teams are buying in to the idea that older free agents are worth it. That’s partly because the young players are far better developed. The quality of programs is exceptional—not just college programs, but travel teams and third-party independent entrepreneurs. They’re doing cutting-edge stuff. Now players at 21, 22 and 23 are just more advanced. The development process is just so much shorter than it used to be.”
