Oh, I know Chipper was great. Not slighting him at all - especially the body of work over a long period of time.Lol I’m gonna need you to google Chipper’s bona fides man. RAJ has more excitement in his pinky than Chipper’s entire body of work but
That body of work is pretty damn good. RAJ will likely pass him but right now? No.
For me, no. There were long stretches of time where you couldn’t get Chipper out.Oh, I know Chipper was great. Not slighting him at all - especially the body of work over a long period of time.
I guess what I'm asking is Acuna better today than Chipper at his peak? If the answer is no I'm happy to accept it. Like I said, I didn't see it so I don't know. Baseball Reference doesn't tell me the whole story.
It's too soon to say yet. I think a separator between Ronald and Chipper is do you think Ronald can play Gold Glove defense. Chipper was a good defensive 3B, but I don't think there was ever a time where he was thought of as the best defensive player at his position. Could Ronald be that at one point? Maybe.Oh, I know Chipper was great. Not slighting him at all - especially the body of work over a long period of time.

Even when Chipper got out, it seemed like the pitcher had to work really hard to do so. The dude seemingly never threw a bat away or looked like he was fooled. If he got out, it is like he knew what the pitcher was trying to do, but just missed his pitch.Other thing about Chipper, you couldn’t pitch scheme around him. Left or right he MASHED
Ronald is never going to be thought of as the best defender at his position and that’s a good thing. I hope he backs off the steals too. We need him healthy. It's too soon to say yet. The returns on Ronald are early, but relative to Chipper's first 2-3 years in the league he appears to have more power, similar OBP, and steals more bases.
His first 6-7 years were nuts. Then you look at the rest of his career and the dropoff just wasn't ever there other than them limiting his games more the last couple of years. The guy was mid .800s OPS from 35-40.From 1998-2001, Chipper played 158 games on averaged and OPS over 1.000
Dude was built different
The most impressive thing in his career might have been hitting .364 at age 36. If memory serves he was actually hitting over .400 for significant parts of that season, then kind of slumped midseason (hitting "only" .270 for a period of time) and brought the average down. It was by far the highest BA he had in any season. Crazy. His first 6-7 years were nuts.
