We're going to be having this conversation all year about Luke Jackson. I never get it when marginal players get treated like they are valuable just because they're out of options. It's not like he won't clear waivers.

10 years in, and nobody can explain Heyward.
You know how some really athletic players never "learn to play the game" or never quite learn proper technique, and are overly reliant on pure athletic ability?

I've always thought Heyward was the opposite. He has incredible physical size and athleticism, but always has played like a guy who doesn't have it. He's never had a swing designed to make use of his power potential (only 123 career HRs in 1235 games). I've always thought it was a very mechanical-looking swing too, like he isn't just letting it rip and thinking about it way too much. He is a good defensive outfielder, but it is amazing how his bat never came around.

They DFA’d him last year and he cleared waivers in like August. Literally makes no sense.

That’s because the Braves organization broke him. He would probably had never hit lefties well, but I’m 100% convinced the Braves organization is to blame. Guys don’t have their best year at age 20.

I think that any organization might have broken him. I read an article after he was traded to St Louis (found it again here: Bernie: Heyward believes his best is yet to come) where he didn't want to go into specifics, but he talked about how in Atlanta they tried to "sell" him to the fanbase and generated a lot of hype about him. Well, no s**t. Any of the 29 other teams in the league would have done that exact same thing. He was an uber-prospect, the top prospect in baseball, and the treatment he got in Atlanta would have been similar to what he experienced on any team, and probably not as bad as what he would have experienced playing in a bigger market.

Heyward's single biggest problem is that there's a giant hole in his swing that has never been addressed or fixed - that has persisted after his time in Atlanta. He's so easy to pitch inside, and really the only way for him to hurt you as a pitcher is if you make a huge location mistake.

I’m not a follower of women’s basketball but doesn’t Tennessee Volunteers women basketball recruit itself?
It certainly did when Pat was there, but that was almost 10 years ago now, when current recruits were in elementary or middle school. The talent pool in women's CBB is still about as deep as the kiddie pool, but it admittedly is deeper than when the Lady Vols were in their heyday, and there are many more good programs than their used to be. It isn't just Tennessee and UConn anymore.

I think the road back to the top for them is harder than many think, but it is absolutely do-able.

Probably a better coach as far as Xs and Os, but who knows if she would be able to recruit as well.
It’s going to be interesting for sure.

For all of Holly’s issues, she was the fastest to x benchmark wins in women’s basketball history. She just couldn’t live up to what Pat did - and lost the team in the process - so she had to go.

I guess what I’m getting at is she’s probably a pretty good coach - but not Pat Summit. So we’ll see how Harper stacks up.

Nobody is Pat Summitt. That isn't why Holly was fired. She was fired because for 4 seasons in a row, they just weren't all that good at all. 36-28 (.563) in conference play over a 4 year stretch, for a program that is a traditional power in the sport, just isn't good. Never made a Final Four, and didn't go beyond the Second Round for 3 straight years.

The bottom line for her is that regardless of what past performance actually was, she pretty clearly lost the team this season. If you lose your squad, you kind of have to go no matter what.
