The Argument Against Debord

Lol the miserable curmudgeon wasn't directed at you personally. Speaking more on a wide scale basis. Apologies, I know we all love the same team but have differing opinions.

No problem. I'm actually cool with DeBord, but that's a different thread.

To those ok with the Debord hire, you may still want to hope for someone else. If not, be prepared for neverending debates. Too many claims have been made by those against him now. He could be decently successful but it wouldn't matter.

A loss to Bama would only happen because of Debord.
The OL doesn't improve greatly - Debord.
Dobbs overthrows on a play - Debord called the wrong play.

I wish this was an exaggeration. However, we all are familiar enough with VN to know it's not.

This will get buried in the ignorance here, but go and watch this video (quality is awful)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFIAoIPSKek&feature=youtu.be

Michigan vs. Florida, 2008 Capital One Bowl. DeBord (OC) petitioned Rich Rodriguez to let him run a spread offense because he knew he could beat Florida that way.

He knows how to run a spread offense.

Now, continue the squawking and poo flinging.

Nvm. Already addressed.

C'mon man, he is more than their field hockey coach.

Even the Detroit Free Press seems to be raising a proverbial eyebrow at the interest in Debord.

Tennessee could hire Mike DeBord away from Michigan?

Yeah he is the Olympic sport coordinator.
I don't know why it's so hard to understand that we want someone who is successful currently, someone who can connect with recruits and have some name recognition.
If you want a coach successful from a decade ago then should we through Lou holtz name in the kitty.... Of course not.
Bottom line this guy ain't called a play or recruited in a long time. His job now is so peripheral I'm stunned he is being considered at the positions he is. He is a risky bet period.
There are very successful candidates running similar offensive styles right now less risky.
He could be great, there are several who we know are performing great right now.
I hope we at least take an honest look at them before hiring the Motorola flip phone.

I bet Preston Williams will be so excited about a Mike DeBord hire. I'm sure 2016 kids are ready to commit to the Deboring Train already!

I guess you did't see PW dressed out in Big Orange clothing when he was at Auburn this weekend. I am sure PW knew about DeBord at the time. Was asked to leave early. Great!!

Go Vols!!

Butch Jones success relies more on recruiting than coaching ability. If he can keep the talent coming to Knoxville then this guy will be more successful than he ever has before. It's about Jimmy's and Joe's not X's and O's.

As a 61 year old I know an older guy (Debord) has seen most everything football could offer. Is he a coaching prodigy? I dont know, if he were he probably would already be a head coach. Something tells me he would be okay with the X's and O's. I have seen alot of teams full of really good Jimmies and Joes who were lacking the right X's and O's. So good luck to us and whomever Butch hires.
Edit: watching the basketball game and with only 9 available Jimmies and Joes, easy to see the importance of X's and O's.

You guys touting the bowl game performance need to also take into account that the 07 Florida defense is one of the worst defenses in the last 10 years at Florida, and certainly the worst of Meyers tenure there.

From the Detroit Free Press Article:
"DeBord last worked with quarterbacks and wide receivers in 1985-86, at Fort Hays State."

With such a sparkling resume, it's little wonder this 58-year-old who was an OC 15 YEARS AGO!, and hasn't coached at all in 2 years is such a hot commodity! Better get him, Coach Jones, before Bama or OU or FSU or USC snatch him up...

The 2007 season was 15 years ago? How time flies!

Underlining and caps locking your error was probably not the best idea.

The thing is you are competing with 32 NFL teams, 13 other SEC teams, and four more power conferences. Plus you've lost 6 or 7 games in what... seven consecutive years. Sometimes you just have to pinch your nostrils, grab the best you can, and deal with it.

The bottom line is I don't think DeBord is the worst they can do by a long shot.

I don't think it will be the end of the world if he is hired.

I am not impressed with Mangus at all as an example. SC just never has been that great on offense compared to some of the other high octane teams around IMO.

My problem is that DeBord kind of reeks of a cronyism hire without Jones at least looking around. He wants to be comfortable. All coaches are guilty of that to an extent. I get it.

I don't think he is doing his due diligence by trying to shove him through if Basilio and others are to be believed though.

Also don't think a DeBord hire "enhances" the offense as Jones mentioned. He will be more of a yes man than anything IMO given he hasn't called an offense in 7 years and never run the spread.

This program is on the rise and stockpiling some quality offensive players however.

I just can't agree with the premise that this job isn't looking attractive to a lot of candidates.

Especially with a salary that is a 100 grand more than Frost is making in Oregon. Even with Frost on the low end of the spectrum, the planned raises plus what Bajakian was taking in could put them in top 30 territory on pay for assistants.

Thanks for the info on the NFL jobs as well.

In defense of those asking questions, if DeBord was a slam dunk homerun hire Butch and Hart would have already announced it. When you have a full court press of local media selling the idea you know how hot your hire is even to those making the decision. Doesn't mean he won't do well at all. There are pros and cons to this hire all of the pros are mostly behind the scenes type intangibles.

On a more important note, I heard Vols being investigated for underinflated balls during the Iowa stomping.
