A lot of Butch bashing on this site and I’m not saying I haven’t taken part but rather than Butch being a 100% total loser I think of him as being an “almost” guy. I’m assuming anyone reading this is a dyed in the wool Vol fan and needs no reiterations to remember these games. So in 2015 we almost beat Oklahoma, lost in OT, so we “almost” won. Lost to Florida by 1, I can’t bring myself to write the ending, but we “almost” won. We had a lead on Arkansas but you know we “almost” won, and we had a 4th quarter lead on Alabama, and we “almost” won. Close the deal and we’re 12-0 and even if we don’t beat Bama in the rematch we’re still going to a New Years 6 bowl and if we really win instead of “almost winning” at 13-1 and the only loss being to the NC we’re maybe final ranking 2nd? Well “almost” anyway.
And then 2016 rolls around and you know we “almost” win the SEC East, except we choke on apple sauce. I don’t really want to go through the schedule but you see my point. Butch was the guy that “almost” got an MBA but flunked out last semester, “almost” dated a SI swim suit model except he got drunk and missed the Uber. I’m too painfully aware that we were 4-8 last year but if, and granted it’s a big “if” CJP is not an “almost” guy but a “gitter done” guy, I believe there is a big upside to this season.
There is still considerable talent on this roster and if they stay healthy and play to their ability and win the games they’re in, in the 4th quarter it could be pretty sweet. And the good Lord knows Volnation is surely ready for some pretty sweet.

Almost lost a bunch of other games. For every "we could've won" there is a "could have lost." We could have easily lost every game last year except Indiana State.
Talent has come and gone any given year under CBJ. Just looking at what transfer players and recent Vols who under achieved here but are in the NFL are doing tells the tale. Hopefully we have some talent that CJP can get to play up to their potential. If so, the rebuild gets faster.

“Almost” is pushing it pretty far imo.

3-7 vs Georgia and Florida
0-5 vs Alabama
0-10 vs SEC West teams
2-3 vs Vanderbilt
14-26 vs SEC
5 win regular season, 6 win regular season, 4 win regular season in his 5 years here.

Not much “almost” in those stats.

I would say "in spite of Butch" we had some opportunities to play for something big, but we came up short in 15&16 and the wheels came off in 17. There is enough talent to be a good team, but the soft, awful offense and excessive injuries fell on their face.

Pruitt has a lot of weapons at his disposal and this can be a quick turnaround if he is the right coach.

How many P5 HC offers did Butch get after UT fired him? How many Div II?

Nope, he's pretty much a 100% total loser who coasted on Brian Kelly's recruiting to get the job at UT, and then failed in spectacularly narcissistic fashion due to his misplaced belief in the infallibility of his "system", and his absolutely reprehensible judgement in assistant hires.

You almost had me convinced that CBJ was a good coach! 😀 Then I remembered last year. I'm hopeful that CJP is the coach to turn this around quickly.

Why are we still talking about this clown?
Only in reference to the expectations for CJP.

Butch is gone. I’ve yet to see a single post that wants it any other way.

Now it’s just trying to figure out what will be reasonable expectations for CJP in his 1st year as a HC.

Sure we were 4-8 last year but the what if’s are galore.

The biggest if I have is at QB. Last year as hindered as our QBs were due to scheme and game plan none stepped up. What’s worst is the only way to step up in that scheme is to be able to run you way out of a bust play like Dobbs was able to do.

I’m really looking forward to seeing it our guys can do with a game plan that’s not an open book test for WV and all the other scrub teams on our schedule. Butch made it easy to prepare with confidence for the Vols. I expect CJP to run things much different. I expect great things from the Vols this year and going forward.

This is pretty brutal but true nonetheless

On the money.

Turns out without Dobbs to save three or four games he would have been and still may be the worst coach in Tennessee history. Easy to see he had some recruiting ability but was the worse in game coach that we've ever had at UT.

Butch is "Almost" going to make Bama better. Ok maybe not, but at least he is almost not mentioned here anymore.

I still don't get him getting an Alabama job offer - - to do anything!

his biggest accomplishment in his coaching career to date was making Dooley look great!

Mark Richt was an "almost" guy at UGA and was rewarded with a HC job over a decade as a result. He never put a team on the field like we saw Jones put on the field in his final year as a Vol coach. Butch Jones was not an almost guy, he was a never gonna get it done guy.
