Not many cows where I ride. Lots of corn, though.

Got my 50 in today. I have an issue with my left Achilles tendon. Hurts very bad when I put pressure on my left foot and the back of my left ankle is red. I won't be riding for a few days. On a good note, I crushed the usual final hill despite the pain.

Too much riding too soon.

Achilles' Tendonitis, apparently. I've read it's been linked to the use of Speedplay pedals, which is what I ride. So, a combination of too much, too soon and Speedplay pedals is my guess. I changed the dynamics of my bike, too. so that surely fits into the equation somewhere. I may go back to my old Look pedals for a bit to see if that helps.

I never really had that problem.

Isn't your pedal stroke motion largely the same, regardless of pedal?

Generally, yes. Speedplays have a lot more float than Look or SPD style pedals. I bought them to deal with my IT band problems. My foot moves all over the place with the Speedplays.

Great, busy day in the shop. Made enough money to warrant buying us all steaks and beer tonight. Sold 4 bikes, took in about 12 more repairs, kicked out several repairs. Over $3k in sales today... I'll probably go in tomorrow and build some of the Felt mountain bikes that came in yesterday morning.

They say this summer is going to be buggy. I've already inhaled one or two and had a couple stuck in my ear this year. I did not track insect encounters in prior years, but it does seem early for this.

We have mosquitoes here already. I mostly ride along the Mississippi River... it's going to be horrible this year.

Agreed to pace a friends 10 yr old son in his first mtb race. Its 3.25 miles. I think this should be fun.

Don't think I've seen mosquitoes. It's been bigger bugs.

I like those swarms of bugs that form close to the river later in the summer. Always fun zooming through those.

Oh, hate those so much. I can't hold my breath long enough to make it through those.

Ok... new to the whole cycling thing. Trying to decide between a road bike or a mtn. bike. I live in Chattanooga so there are plenty of places to ride both. Any suggestions as to which way to go. Benefits or downfalls to either?? I am starting blank on this one guys.

If you want to ride from your house and don't mind traffic, go with the road bike. If you want something more exciting and dont mind hauling your bike, go with the mtn bike. Of course, the mtn bike can go on both road and trail

Good points Velo. Clothing is another consideration. I can wear shorts and a t-shirt on my mountain bike and everyone was cool but road cyclists didnt take me serious. I didn't care though cause I was in the woods. Tried that when I first got my road bike and not only did they not take me serious but they looked at me like I had a 3rd arm.

What if I said I had a long way to ride on the road to the trail would you still recommend the mtn bike or would you recommend picking one or the other?

Almost no one rides their mtn bike to the trail. Get a bike rack for $50 or throw it in the back of your suv/pickup. Time is a big advantage for road bikes.

If I want to ride my road bike for an hour, I hop on my bike and go. An hour later, I'm done. An hour mtn bike ride really takes 2 hrs by the time you load up the bike and drive to the trail and back home. I like road biking but nothing beats the exhilaration of mtn biking. Its like being 10 again. Riding through mud, creeks, over logs and rocks is so much fun.

Cost is another factor. Entry level mtn bike - $400-700. Entry level road bike $700-1200.

Yes, if time spend getting to rides is a big factor for you, as your last post suggests, I would consider what tri says about the convenience/inconvenience of going to a trail versus riding on a nearby road route.

This gives me something to think about. Time is not a huge factor but it is important because I have a two year old son that I like to spend as much time as possible. Any good entry level brands or bikes to look at for road bikes?
