so for some reason I just thought of this. Isn't the alamo, which I believe is in San Antonio, where we actually got our nickname as 'the volunteer state' hence the Vols. That can't hurt matters can it? Though I think we did lose that in the end:unsure:

The nickname "Volunteer State" comes from the Mexican War..when the war started, President Polk called for 2,600 men from each state to contribute to the war effort. When the Governor called for 2,600 volunteers for said effort, 30,000 men answered the call within a week. Henceforth, Tennessee was the "Volunteer State"

and so i settled it. I know this because my Company Commander in Kosovo was from TN, and that was part of his speech when he gave our interpreters Vol T-shirts at the end of our hitch there

GO CONNECTICUT WITH A BIG 0.72 ON THE SCALE!!! Honestly, in my whole time in the Army, i met 1 person from Connecticut (my home state) This was in the bar in Tongduchon, Korea, the night where i was staying at Camp Casey before getting on the bus to the Airport to get me on home..The fact that i was in the Cavalry probably didnt help, but there are many good things that came from being in the Cav....In New England, College Football is not a big deal, i played Hockey and Baseball as a kid, we watched Notre Dame on saturdays because that was what's on...But in the Cav, where my friends were diverse as anything, but generally hailing from that swath of land between Texas and Virginia, Saturdays were sacred...and so, being a survivor, i needed to root for someone that would be on TV at the bar. I had great friends who were from Florida, Georgia, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Alabama, the only common feeling they had on saturday was a hatred of Tennessee.:) So naturally, i started pulling for the Vols, to have a rooting interest, and to piss my buddies off at the same time.

My birth as a Vol fan came not long after 9/11, the first saturday afternoon we were allowed off post...in infamous Georgia game, i was at a Chili's in Colorado Springs with 2 great friends, both from Dalton, GA, the squib kick, the lack of any defense, all following a classic Travis Stephens TD run...when UGA scored the winning TD, i stood up and piledrived my barstool into about 8 million pieces...my buddy's grins showed that now i was truely a part of something inside that doesnt go away, being an SEC football fan, and i'm glad that i bleed Orange...GO VOLUNTEERS
