The '92 Florida game was such a memorable one

When the SEC split into divisions, the general thought around the league was Bama and Tennessee would play in the SECCG just about every year.

You had writers like Charles Hollis in Birmingham putting out hit pieces on Spurrier claiming UF was a flash in the pan, a pass happy offense wouldn’t fly in the SEC and Spurrier would be home in front of his TV set on New Years Day.

No one considered UF to be a consistent threat back then.

This is true

That day started out so hot and humid.

Once the rain started I remember having to hold your hand over your drink so it wouldn't get watered down and buying lunch the next day with wet money.

I was there sitting under the VOLS sign with my parents. It rained so hard you could barely see the far side of the stadium, or the campus behind it. I also remember the student section raining cups onto the field during the second half. Anyone know the reason?

I'll never forget that Mose Phillips touchdown pass from Heath Shuler in the rain. It seemed like the harder it rained that day, the louder the crowd became.

"He has scored. He has scored. He has gone all -- the -- way."

"Touchdown, big orange, in the downpour."

- John Ward

There are some great names in that video like Shane Bonham, Shawn Summers, Craig Faulkner, "Little Man" Stewart, Mike Stowell, Charlie Garner, David Horn, John Becksvoort, Todd Kelly, etc.

Section TT, right below John Ward. My cousin left. I stayed. And yes, the weather seemed to make the crowd get louder and louder. Awesome experience.

This was my first game in Neyland, I was 12 years old and had moved to Knoxville from Sacramento, CA that summer so my mom could be closer to her family. Needless to say my blood turned orange that day. My son lives in Arkansas with his mother, but I have succeeded in passing on my fanaticism to him. Our first game together was ‘16 UF game. Two awesome memories that I wouldn’t trade for anything.

That's right and proud of it. First game 1969. First job Neyland stadium. A couple of dozen away games. Season ticket holder 1988 til 2001. YOU miss out on the best era of Tennessee football. LMAO @ you !

Great game with a very specific memory for me as well. I was visiting my brother at Georgia Tech (yeah, he is a yellow jacket) and he did not have a TV in his dorm room so we went to the Varsity and watched it on TV's there. As it became apparent to everyone around us we were Tennessee fans all the Georgia fans started joining us in cheering for Tennessee. Georgia fans hate Florida too. My brother and I still refer to that game as the Frosted Orange game (A drink the Varsity is famous for).

Just having a joke with y’all..I’m a 3rd generation knoxvillian and my papaw worked on the railroad that goes through UTs campus. Grew up learning about our football history and love watching old games with my dad. I’m more just jealous I didn’t get to really enjoy Neyland in the 90’s!

That was a result of a series of events that led to the end of Johnny Majors’ tenure. Things got ugly internally at the end of 1991 and into the offseason. Then Johnny had a heart attack and rushed back and it really messed with team chemistry right in the middle of the 92 season.

If majors comes back for the Alabama game I think he was safe and Fulmer would have moved on.

Was Dickey the coach when Spurrier was recruited or was it the previous coach? Didn’t UT offer Spurrier a basketball scholarship? Did we reject him for football or did he not want to play for us because of the offense we ran? I think the story was that the lack of interest was mutual.

Spurrier wanted to throw the ball in college

I remember this game well too! I was a freshman in the Pride of the Southland Band and didn’t know what it would be like wearing double layer wool in the craziest weather conditions. It’s weird how you can be miserable and joyous at the same time. I remember thinking we are already super soaked so God, bring it on even harder. He sure did!
I was in the student section beside the band. Some a-holes a few rows behind me kept throwing ice at the tuba player trying to get the ice in the tuba. What a day....
