Dale Carter, Bill Bates, Chad Clifton and especially Eddie Brown come to mind for the Honorable Mention lists.

Their durability in the NFL is notable

al wilson - only title in modern era and he was the unquestioned leader on that team

neyland - obvious

peyton - he is synonymous with UT at this point

The others I think are more for UT fans to debate - most people are surprised when I tell them reggie white went to UT for ex - not sure why

so i'd go with fulmer and majors - both were great players and had great runs as HC's

Neyland- Is UT football

Manning- Is synomanous with UT football right now

Atkins- The first great Vol pro. He was the SEC player of the quarter century from 1950-1975. Won a national title.

Majors- Look, you have to put Majors in there. I don't care if he didn't win a national title. He helped resurrect UT football and was a star in the 1950's.

George Cafego- The first Tennessee star. He coached 30 years at the university. He helped put Tennessee on the map.

1) Neyland- can't leave out somebody the stadium is named after

2) Fulmer- can't deny the success the man had, spoiled us all

3) White- redefined how DE is recruited & played, in state kid, one of the best defensive players of all time at any level

4) Peyton- no explanation needed

5) Al Wilson- one of if not the best leaders to ever wear the orange, Lord how I wish we had an Al Wilson type player on defense.

1. General Neyland. No doubt.
2. Peyton Manning. Best QB we have ever had.
3. Phillip Fulmer. Pre-2005 Hey was a pretty good coach, had a long tenure here and did well. Won us a National Championship.
4. Condredge Holloway- History, First African American QB to play in the SEC.
5. John Ward- You could literally see the game from listening to the raido. His voice just gave you chill bumps.

HM: Eric Berry, Johnny Majors, Doug Dickey, Al Wilson, Reggie White, Doug Atkins, Tee Martin, many more.

maybe i am misunderstanding the post but....

why not nick reveis?

he is a vol legacy, he was one of the hardest working players the vols have ever had, probably could have played elsewhere but CHOSE to walk on with the vols and worked his way into a scholarship and a starting spot on the defense (which he was the heart and soul of if not the entire team, not to mention he could lay the wood), a great leader on and off the field, reeks of integrity, LOVED THE VOLS, and so on and so on...

of course he is not peyton manning or reggie white and he hasn't played a snap in the pros, but does he not define what it mean to be a vol?

For me it's Neyland,as much as hate to Majors,Fulmer,Peyton Manning, and all the guys that don't get any credit for all the dirty work they did for those great UT teams. All the big Blocks they made for those great runs and all the big plays and big tackles they made that made every saturday a memorable one.
