I still don't get Evans seeing the floor. He hurt them more than he helped them. Turner had no business with the ball in his hand on the last possession.
This team is getting better every game and Bowden will be a star in the league.

Roy Williams said after the game that "that's the luckiest I've been in 29 years of coaching, 1003 games, and that's the honest truth." He said it three times--said he told Barnes that after the game. He was pissed about his team's poor shooting.

Somebody has to dig the ditches and pick up the trash. He is what he is. Sets screens, handles the ball a lot in the 1/2 court set, bangs in the paint, has 5 fouls, can hit the 3 if ignored on the perimeter, is very unselfish, can help younger players develop, etc. he's not going to take over a game but obviously he's making a contribution or else he would play zero minutes. He's probably doing exactly what Barnes tells him to do which sets a great example for the younger more athletic players. I don't think Kwe played a single minute and IMO it's probably because he thinks he's smarter than Barnes and isn't listening to him.

We lost today because Admiral and Mostella were no shows. Hard to win when they produce nothing. Mostella was really a liability on defense today.
At least Mostella had 3 boards - Admiral had 1 rebound in 13 minutes. If anything Alexander should have had his minutes.

But, but, wait a minute, we have been told that Barnes is "over the hill", "hanging on for retirement". Suddenly he knows what he is doing? How confusing for us!!!!!:loco:

UT played a very good game and Fulkerson and Williams blocked or altered a few shots on the defensive end. Alexander should have gotten a few more minutes to match up against Bradley.

Bowden and Turner are a dynamic backcourt while the offense should flow through Hubbs.

These close losses to Wisconsin, Oregon and North Carolina should give this young team a boatload of confidence.

Great effort today and GBO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

15 point first half lead. Cut to 8 at the half. Then UNC scored six quick points in the first minute or two of the second half and the TN lead was 2. UNC outscored TN by 2 baskets over the next 18 or 19 minutes.

:pepper:Rick Barnes will be the SEC coach of the year! Fill the "Summit" and lets show them some support. Thanks goodness Texas fired Barnes.

1. An absolute heart breaker that should have been a win. Tennessee outplayed North Carolina for 35 minutes and as a young team it shows they need to learn to close these games out. North Carolina is lucky to escape.

2. Rick Barnes had an excellent game plan and UT followed it perfectly. Loved the defensive intensity, the game plan on offense to drive/kick and isolation for Hubbs when someone not named Jackson was on him. They did a great job mixing their post coverage and I especially liked the focus on Hubbs but wish I saw more. Maybe the cramps got to him.

3. Part of the problem with playing so many guys is not knowing who your top 5 is and that showed. Barnes wasn't sure after Hubbs and Phillips who the other guys should have been. It showed late.

4. I have to criticize here though. I get playing Fulkerson/Williamson so much this game but after Hicks fouled out and Roy went with the four guard lineup Tennessee got killed because of sticking with that combination. Williams can't guard a guy like Jackson or switch on guards like UNC and they attacked him for buckets. That can't happened. I know the rebounding was a huge factor but you got to get stops first there and that should have been Admiral or Turner in there.

5. Please Rick, it's not a shot at Lew Evans...but we have to start going with Kyle Alexander instead. Alexander would have been helpful today and he should have played more.

6. Jordan Bowden came in and outplayed every North Carolina guard today. 12/5/2/2 from him as a freshman in this case is impressive. He reminds of Cameron Tatum with a motor. Just really like his game.

7. Bernard King Player of the Game: Robert Hubbs played the best game of his career and I think he puts 25 if he doesn't cramp up. He needs more offense run through him because that is when he thrives but him and Tony Bradley were the two best players on the floor tonight and that is beyond impressive. He's starting to turn a corner I think (and hope and pray).

8. Tennessee really needs a 6'10/240 post player that will rebound. Too bad there's not one. However, you just aren't going to stop Tony Bradley when your tallest player getting minutes is 6'8 and he can go do whatever the hell he pleases since the refs looked the other way the entire game. Barnes won't use that as an excuse though and he will be pissed.

9. Barnes has to let Shembari Phillips know he has a full green light. You need more than five shots from him in a game like this. The defense is there. The point guard ability is there. The shooting is there. It's time to take control and get buckets in big moments.

10. An incredible effort by a Tennessee team that had no business being in this game. They played their asses off and it should have been a victory. North Carolina hung around long enough with their offensive rebounding and help from the officials and the veterans of UNC took over and finished the game. Lamonte Turner and Shembari Phillips didn't play well enough to finish this game out and the team couldn't find consistent scoring late. It's a testament to this team how much better they get every game and I think this game shows they can make noise in a weak SEC. But damn this one still hurts. Should have been a victory.

Phillips, Williams, Fulk, and Bowden make the future look extremely bright.

These freshmen are getting valuable experience and playing like they've been there before. Best part is they are all 4 year guys.

This all day! Future is bright...:matrix:

I hope we can bring the same intensity in every game from here on. If so is an NIT invite a possibility????

I like our chances to keep the gonzaga game close too. But, thing is, if we keep it close, we have to win it.

I am a huge Volunteer fan ... have been for as long as I can remember. And I got to watch this game on ESPN. It all makes sense - our youth, the team is playing hard and getting better, we were up against a top-tier team, etc., etc.

However, after watching our football team manage to find a way to get two inexcusable losses this year, I am a bit demoralized. I'll pull out of it soon -- and along the way I'll keep wearing my orange and pulling for our teams. But this year just stinks in so many ways. Every time we get close but still find a way to lose, it's taking years off my life!

Oh well, Go Vols! We're gonna pull out of this at some point! I love my Volunteers!!!! Hoping for a big win in the Music City in a few weeks.

. . . and it is exciting to see so many young players out on the court playing well. I hope Coach Barnes keeps it going!

If you noticed, after Hubbs got the cramp, he didn't hardly touch the ball and wasn't part of the last minute or so of the game. Unfortunate, but I think if he didn't get the cramp or whatever it ended up being, he would have continued to take command of the game and I think it would have ended in a W...

Its refreshing having a coach who doesn't make excuses for the loss. We weren't good in the first 4 and the last 4 minutes of the game. Dominated the game with a young team but still lots of room to learn.

I agree with OP when he says we need one 6'10 240-250 pound post player to grab some rebounds. They had 12-18 Offensive rebounds and we were lucky they missed as many shots as they did.

Hope this drives this team for the rest of the season and their careers. Fulkerson, Bowden, Williams and Phillips are all playing really well right now. Turner made a bad choice at the end of the game but made some big shots and is coming into form. Was Kwe Parker even on the bench ast night? He didn't play at all and I didn't even see him on the bench. Also Alexander got very little time in the game, which surprises me.

Parker should play more,IMO. He doesn't have the best shot, but he's one of the most energetic players on the team. Makes awesome decisions, and would move turner to the 2. Once bone gets back

Bone/Parker
Phillips/turner
hubbs/mostella
fulk/schofield
Williams/Alexander

He doesent want them to feel good about being close?
Tennessee played thier asses off and came up a hair short. Barnes should be dancing in the streets.

H to the No he doesn't want them feeling good about coming close. If you feel good about "coming close" when do you feel bad about losing? If you don't feel bad about losing, what is your motivation to improve and close out games? For anyone who has watched this team consistently knows it has shown an ability to play with higher competition even with it's youth. The next step is finishing the deal and putting down a resume building win. We lost that opportunity last night and CRB knows it. As a fan we can look at things a little differently and be glad that we didn't get ran out of the gym. However, I'm glad we have a HC who is striving for more.

UNC had 22 offensive rebounds.

Mostella played 7 minutes.

Alexander played 2 minutes.

Turner was 3-11 FGs. 1 assist. 4 turnovers. 1 rebound. 2-2 FTs.

Only 11 assists. 3 had 2 and 5 had 1.

http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools...o_pdf/2016-17/box_score/stats_20161212aaa.pdf

I know that 7 minutes is not a lot of time to get in a rhythm offensively. Especially if those 7 minutes are broken up into 2 or 3 different segments. With that said I felt like Mostella hid a little and wasn't ready to contribute on that stage. I know he has the potential to score 25 on any given night. My question is what can he bring to the game if he doesn't come in and make his first few shots?
