This. There are gigantic LOS problems on both sides of the ball. Yet the single biggest talking point about this team (outside of a general lack of effort, which I believe does exist) is about how bad JG is.There was no push from the line to begin with. Games are won in the trenches and neither the offensive nor defensive line made their presence known.
Tennessee simply does not have the personnel or talent level for this scheme. Can’t hold the line of scrimmage and LBs lack talent.
If they don’t tweak the defensive line and front, it will be Sal Sunseri bad in league play.
Stopping the run in a 3-4 defense is largely on the ILB's filling their gap assignments. D line didn't play amazingly, but the linebackers did not know where in the everliving hell they were. On multiple plays, I watched them running to a gap that was filled, running into each other, or standing completely still. Consequently, that RB had a field day running through massive holes.
To'oto'o is a true freshman calling the D (and he missed badly on some assignments in the run game), and Jeremy Banks had no idea what the hell he was doing. ILB's in the 3-4 HAVE to fill their gaps or you'll see exactly what we saw on Saturday all season long.
Don't know if Bituli coming back suddenly fixes that (might) but it absolutely cannot be worse than what we saw.
Emerson needs to grow up in a hurry as his push in the middle makes the gaps an awful lot smaller if he's commanding a double.
We will have to wait and see.
Let’s go back to that 4-2-5. Panthers would have tripled their rushing yardage.

Our players on the DL lost their match ups against GA ST’s OL. If we run a 4-3 or 3-4 does it really matter if we can’t win match ups with lesser opponents? Our DL had one sack! They were absolutely manhandled. There was some serious coaching malpractice that took place this past Saturday.
Our DL actually had a lot of pressure in the 1st half. I thought the same as you until I rewatched. Rewatch the 1st half and pay attention to both DL and OL play. They were much better than I initially thought.
My eyes may eternally bleed if I watch even a second of that game ever again. I love to be optimistic if possible, but it is nearly impossible to put a positive spin on that horrendous loss. I can only hope there is monumental improvement against BYU. I will be cheering on the VOLS regardless.
Every defense relies on linebackers filling gaps and run fits. we only played like 10 snaps of 3-4 the rest was 4-2-5 nickle. most teams in college football and nfl are playing nickle vs spread teams.Stopping the run in a 3-4 defense is largely on the ILB's filling their gap assignments. OK so we played better in the first half but ultimately lost the game in the second half.
I wonder if having to start Burrell had something to do with that. Their QB was only 11/24 throwing the ball, but Burrell got picked on multiple times.Tennessee played the defense that they did because the didn't trust the players. You could tell that when the announcers questioned why the didnt even attempt to put pressure on a sunbelt QB. Tennessee played basically a prevent defense but for the whole game instead of being up 4 touchdowns.
