The 2023 March Madness “Other Games” Thread

Agreed there. The bball threads are usually full of people complaining (lazily) that "the refs suck" over and over.

Again, aTm wasn't subtle at all about their intention to draw fouls. Coach your guys to be aware, stay in the fundamentals on defense, and try to take them out of their game with your offense.

Can we possibly go thru March without fools insisting the "refs are ruining the game" or whatever? Doubtful.

To be honest, I’ve been saying it for years and years. We can all just put our heads in the sand and ignore it…and I get that none of us have control over it. I can get specific, but it’s not worth it. There are reasons why it’s bad, but not worth going over again.

Frankly, I go stretches in the regular season where I watch very little because the product isn’t good.

I think that NCAA officiating being so inconsistent makes it especially difficult to be an NCAA coach. NBA coaches pretty much know what to expect from refs with their whistles. In the the NCAA, it’s like a box of chocolates. And coaching 18-22 year olds to adapt is very challenging.

With the billions of revenue the NCAA and conferences are collecting, they really need to upgrade the officiating. At least in the P-6 and the NCAAT.

I will say this though, officiating is just bad at all levels. I think adding reviews and the overall advancement in technology have made it a very difficult job and it seems the quality of officials has declined because of the added stress and scrutiny for the profession.

Especially because more than any other sport except maybe baseball horrific officials can (and too often do) overtake a game. How do you coach kids to play when any given moment what was alright before becomes a foul or vice-versa? Like I said, if it's consistent within a game, a team can adjust- but we can't even get that much. And it's especially embarrassing when it's happening over and over on the biggest stage for the sport.

I'll agree the quality of refs is very questionable in the NCAA but it's not weighted in any way to crap teams like aTm. If you lose to aTm, you lost because you let them play their game. It ain't the refs.

This is why I can't usually watch. I mean honestly, that one was clear as all get out. And like I said, they gave free throws for less on the other end. Xavier got absolutely bailed out.

Kennesaw State didn’t have another outlet. They went with the play that was covered well when they should’ve had a plan B.

Owls had a shot and left it to a single drive by their PG, should have had guys diving to the rim to dump it off to or try for a tip back.
