The 2023 March Madness “Other Games” Thread

Charles Barkley stating the NCAA needs to put a stop to these extra years COVID is over these guys are old he is completely correct
Nah that's dumb. Doesn't make sense to give an extra year to the seniors of that messed up COVID year but not the other players on those teams who were also robbed of a normal season. Its not like theyre giving every college player an extra year

And good for employee morale. But even if given a 75% chance of picking each game correctly, the probability of being perfect after 48 games is infinitesimal.

They have a $100k reward for some other pick performance. And if Creighton makes the FF he sweetens the prize.

Great for morale. Kind of like the small business owner who bought lottery tickets for all his employees when the pot got really high.

if you assume independence of games, and you can correctly pick each game with xx probability, you can determine how high xx has to be before the odds that you correctly pick all 48 games is better than 50:50. xx is really close to 100%.

It will eventually phase out as 5 years pass. I have no problem with it because mid majors can have more experienced players.

Good point - how much more 'lenient' would this fan base be with Barnes if at least one of his early tournament outs was a NC?
Would we still hear the narrative of Barnes is good, but...
A national title buys you a ton of goodwill, no matter where you coach. At a non-basketball power like UT or UVA, it buys you a lifetime’s worth.

I need a few more upsets to happen before 10:00 tonight to make me feel good about our game. Hopefully Charleston pulls this off.

(Near 100% for 1/16 x 90+ % for 2/15 x … x close to 50/50 for the 8/9) to the 4th power … odds get infinitesimal for 48/48. And that number is only Round 1. There are also 16x round 2 games to include in the probability. Winning the lottery is probably a million times more likely.

I cannot understand why Charleston kept their best player on the bench for the last five minutes

Very strange strategy there
