Kevin Love is the first guy to average 20 and 15 since Moses Malone in 1979. Not only that, but he is 9th among PF’s in True Shooting % at .593 (only 2 of the top 25 PF’s in TS% average 20 ppg, the other is Dirk). Since there is a “be on a good team” requirement for MVP, Dwight Howard should win.

With Love the T-Wolves are 17-56 (.270 with a point differential of -6.1), and without him they are 0-7 (.000 with a point differential of -10.6). Dave Berri’s Wins Produced model shows that the T-Wolves would win 0 games if Love had been absent the entire season. Without Howard, the Magic win 36. Without Rose, the Bulls win 53 (these are all projections through 62 games).

The way Wins Produced works is that it’s relative to the average player at their position. So if you added Love to a .500 team (31-31, replacing a PF with say 4.0 WP), that team would end up 51-11 after 62 games. Chicago’s starting 5 all have a WP of 5.4+ which is ridiculous. No wonder they have the best record in the East.

Stats are through 62 games:

It's actually kind of smart. This statistic is based on the mathematical relationship between scoring, rebounding, ballhandling, defense and winning. It's not just some dumb player efficiency rating made up of what some sportswriter deems productive, it is based on the correlation between rebounds and winning, etc.

You probably think it's dumb still, but you'd be amazed at how accurate the model is in predicting wins.
