It was a term that young African American outlaw counter culture used and self identified and self described themselves with. It was glorified. When all the bad associated with it was pointed out, and others used it to describe that subset of Americans, mainly AA but white and Hispanic as well, it was decided it was negative, a slur.FWIW. thug became racially charged some time in the 00s. Thug life was promoted in 90s gangsta rap (Tupac Shakur etc.) and for a while people knew what that meant and realized it was subculture and exaggeration of street life both the struggles and the violence rather than a definition of black people in America.
At some point, white folks, especially talk show hosts and right wing radio, started using thug to refer to all black people and/or to refer to black people accused of crime but never white people accused of crime. The word stopped being used as a catch-all for everyone but was applied almost exclusively to blacks.
People took notice of the change in usage. And when it started being a term whites applied to blacks only, it started being offensive because people knew what the word had become for a lot of people. Even so, you can still use it but it's a word I'd use with great caution because it has become a term applied almost exclusively to one group.
What prompted this?
Ah one of the RF freaked out over you saying thug. Hate I missed that. Link back to it lol?It was me. Like many of AARP membership age, I missed the little detail that "thug" is apparently racially coded. According to some, I would know that if I weren't living under a rock.
This whole pattern is predictable and repeatable though. Rappers glorify a life of violence through "gangsta rap", and then others began to associate "thug" and "gangster" with young black men, then still others decry the words as racist. Personally, I'm rather tired of having to adapt my vocabulary because somebody decided that a word that has historically had zero racial connotation now does, and worse, that because certain words I've always used are now deemed "coded" or "dog whistles", then I'm racist.
One thing that comes with age is the IDGAF mentality. I'm a nonconformist when it comes to this stuff. If you decide a word is offensive, that's fine but don't expect me to honor your self determined victimism. (I think I probably made up a couple of words there). It was me. Staten Island schools superintendent under investigation for alleged anti-white racist texts
No more white principals on my watch!," one text reads.
"I need to clean up this island," said another message purportedly from the superintendent. "White folks need to recognize this is not the boys club anymore. A strong black woman runs this bitch now, and they can either get on board or get out. If they don't get out, I'm going to take them out one by one. They're not gonna know what hit them. Gonna be fun."

Lincoln getting his comeuppance didn't make any difference. If that was going to happen it would have happened without him.Lincoln was working on a plan to create a colony for blacks to move to, but was killed before it gained traction. Interesting to think what America would be like today, good and bad, had that come to fruition and likewise for what would have become of the colony.
