People took notice of the change in usage. And when it started being a term whites applied to blacks only, it started being offensive because people knew what the word had become for a lot of people. Even so, you can still use it but it's a word I'd use with great caution because it has become a term applied almost exclusively to one group.

It was a term that young African American outlaw counter culture used and self identified and self described themselves with. It was glorified. When all the bad associated with it was pointed out, and others used it to describe that subset of Americans, mainly AA but white and Hispanic as well, it was decided it was negative, a slur.

The reality is it was always negative, it was just a negative that was embraced by those using it until it was used against them. It's the N word in reverse.

It was me. Like many of AARP membership age, I missed the little detail that "thug" is apparently racially coded. According to some, I would know that if I weren't living under a rock.

This whole pattern is predictable and repeatable though. Rappers glorify a life of violence through "gangsta rap", and then others began to associate "thug" and "gangster" with young black men, then still others decry the words as racist. Personally, I'm rather tired of having to adapt my vocabulary because somebody decided that a word that has historically had zero racial connotation now does, and worse, that because certain words I've always used are now deemed "coded" or "dog whistles", then I'm racist.

One thing that comes with age is the IDGAF mentality. I'm a nonconformist when it comes to this stuff. If you decide a word is offensive, that's fine but don't expect me to honor your self determined victimism. (I think I probably made up a couple of words there).

I try to discern whether there is a real victim or not. If so, I'll adapt. If not, I'm totally with you.

But in a country where our "victims" live better than 95% of the rest of the world, I'm less inclined to see victim.

Until and unless some common sense and honesty enter the societal "public conversation " you can count me out. As well as millions of folks just like me.

The elephant in the room is that black males aged 16 to 34 comprise only 4% of the population of the United States.

Those 4% of our society commit over 50% of violent crimes.

The left want to talk about weirdos crossdressing, fictional genders, manufacture racial discord, imply racism on any and all caucasians, etc etc etc...ANYTHING EXCEPT acknowledging the HUGE elephant in the room.
