So I experienced some racism/White privilege today..
Roll up to Publix to get my weeks worth of groceries. Clean cut, clean shaven, casual Polo and khakis on, typical upper class White guy look.
See this Asian lady, old, standing in front of the coffee and blocking the whole aisle. I politely say "Excuse me Mam". She jumped and starts apologizing, then says "excuse me!" I reach for the coffee and she goes "Guess how old I am"..oh boy..HERE we go..talking to a strange crazy woman at the grocery store.
She tells me 80 and of course being the charmer that I am reply "No way you look way too young for 80!".
Then she goes : "You are very handsome". Uh oh..she ain't a GILF..this is getting awkward. She then goes on to tell me where she lives, how she gets up in the morning to walk, and how she is Filipino but an American citizen. She really, really emphasized the citizen part, mentioning it at least 3 times. So I'm like I get it, I'm a White dude, she probably thinks that I think she is an illegal. I didn't and I didn't even care. Then she says "I never talk to strangers but you look like someone I could talk to". "You know (she looks around) most people don't look like I could safely talk to them". I notice I'm the only White person in the aisle..and I'm like daaaayum this lady just went full blown racist saying that because I was the only White guy there she felt safe to talk to me.
So I basically experienced some White privilege at the expense of some Asian racism. It was odd.
