A university spokesperson confirmed that the trophy was accidentally knocked from its stand by the father of a current player, but declined to identify the culprit, who apparently tripped near the display.
The trophy, made of Waterford crystal, is valued at $30,000, and it remains unclear if UA had the item insured. It was on display in the Mal Moore Athletic Building when the accident happened following the Crimson Tide's annual A-Day scrimmage Saturday. The trophy was being displayed in the Hall of Champions on the building's second floor.
