That "awful" defense of ours...

That’s a level of homerism that is comical, what you are essentially referring to is last year’s defense that gave up 42 to OSU and couldn’t get off the field on numerous third downs

Last years defense finished ranked 7th in the nation AFTER the OSU loss.

We were ranked 5th BEFORE that game.

So to say that we would be top 10 is a " comical level of homerism"???

Hahahahaha
Stupid azz comment bud. Nothing personal though. I make dumb comments too from time to time.

For reference

I was thinking the Vols defense strategy was that they knew they could get to State's QB with a light box, even if it meant giving up run yards.

It made the rush defense look bad, but the pass rush is what kept the Vols in the game.

Probably had to scheme this way due to the injuries at DB.

Not too many DC’s would want to pair with our offense.
Heupel is pretty good about understanding when to use hurry-up based on several factors (how tired our D is, how tired opposing D is, timing, etc).

I'd contrast with Butch Jones who would mindlessly run the hurry-up even when our D was exhausted and the opposing D was well rested, and we just got the ball on the kickoff.

That's great and all but that defense has issues. They got 14 points and saved the game. I'll take it. But they got gashed over and over by a team that shouldn't have been able to do it. I get that this is the SEC and we play top caliber opponents. But we made Mississippi state's offense look on par with Georgia. I think anybody thinking objectively could know that that is not true. I don't know if it's road jitters. I don't know what the root evil is. I'm not saying we need to fire coaches. But something just isn't right on defense this year. I'll take the win, but if we play like this against Florida, we're going to get our a$$es handed to Us by another inferior team.
I know what the issue is. We lost Omari Thomas, Omar Norman-Lott, and Elijah Simmons in the interior of the D-Line from last year, not to mention an NFL 1st round edge rusher in James Pierce. The guys who replaced them this year, up to this point, are not as good at setting the edge, or fortifying the line of scrimmage. Arion Carter had 17 tackles the other night. What that tells me is our D-Line is porous and allows opposing RB's to get to the 2nd level far too often. Bottom line is, the guys we recruited on the D-Line to replace who we had last year are not as capable at stopping the run. I personally think there is a size/strength issue there. Either we arent getting true, SEC caliber players at that position or we have a strength/development issue.

Bama held Georgia to 21.
ASU held State to 24.

Our defense is tied with Southern Miss for holding Ms State to 34.
Our defense is one better than Marshall’s (45) holding Georgia to 44.

We have to create turnovers to keep up because we’re unable to get enough stops for the offense to keep up, while scoring 50+ ppg.

Your turn again.
3 of the TDs our D allowed were in short drives after turnovers. They had touchdowns on drives of 20, 26, and 17.

So simply saying “ the defense allowed 34 points” doesn’t exactly tell the whole story.

They also gave up less than 400 total yards and that’s with an overtime. Included. And scored two touchdowns.

By this logic State has a better defense than UGA because they held us to 24 offensive pointers in regulation while UGA gave up 38.

Im not saying our defense is elite but at the same time there are so many variables in any given game you can’t compare any opponents 1:1.

For instance, 21 of States points were from drives of less than 30 yards. Take away the turn overs and make them go 70+ yards and the whole dynamic of the game changes.

Assuming McCoy plays this year (I think he will), I wonder how clos he will be to last year’s level of performance?

Also, how much of difference does Hobbs make in our ability to stop the run?

Those areas are our concern on defense. We rush the passer really well . . . But our zone pass coverage / pass coverage in general opposite of Hood . . . Is suspect. And we are not good a stuffing the run. Shore up those areas / tackle better / more experience for Spillman . . . And this defense improves a lot. As it is . . . The stats are we are only better then UK and Arkansas in conference.

The defense has been good for the most part. I am still a believer in Banks. We have had some very unfortunate injuries in key positions. That is not a coaches fault. They happen. I was disappointed that we could not stop Fluff from gaining 8 yds per carry. He killed us and MS may have won the game if they kept feeding him the ball late in the game. I'm proud of the Vols for fighting with grit on the road.

Our offense and special teams put the defense in a bad spot 3 times, which lead to 22 of the 34 points.

...that did this:

That turrible defense that gave us 14 of the 34 points we scored in regulation. Not just with the West/Josephs scoop & score above, but also Colton Hood's pick six in the first half.

That awful defense that harried and harrassed Miss State's QB so badly, he ended up with a QBR of 22.9. (!!!!!!) [our Joey was once again in the upper 60s]

That poor defense that was at least half of the equation for a victory...on the road...against an undefeated SEC foe.

Man, to have our problems. We are blessed to have our problems.

Go Vols!

Yes, we had dropped passes and punts and a missed field goal and then the crazy tipped passes. We made a lot of mistakes and still won. The defense made the difference in the victory. There will be no margin for error at BAma

Lets not forget the "starters" who are not playing right now. We are basically running a defense with players who we would want in there for pass rush situations, but not necessarily run situations. due to the injuries we have what we have. When we get some players back, I believe our defense will be as good if not better than last year. GO VOLS

You just refuse to give State any credit for being a much better team. They are clearly better than mediocre. Stop basing it on last year's win loss record.
And you persist on giving them to much credit. Will they make a bowl? Yes. Are they a team that should scored 30-40 on us? No. Guess it depends on what you consider mediocre.

Nothing wrong with being realistic.

Tennessee football has had a number of breakout stars this year, but Arion Carter still isn’t being talked about enough. The Vols’ junior linebacker is getting some much-deserved recognition for his play after the win over Mississippi State, though. He has been named SEC Defensive Player of the Week by the conference.

Carter, the starting weak-side linebacker for UT, managed a career-high 17 tackles in the win over the Bulldogs. Most notably, he got a hand on the potential game-tying touchdown throw in overtime to seal the victory.

Tennessee football’s Tyre West is the Co-SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week for his strong play in the Vols’ 41-34 overtime win at Mississippi State. West split the honor with South Carolina edge rusher Bryan Thomas Jr.

West turned in the best performance of his career at Mississippi State, totaling three tackles, two sacks, a forced fumble and an additional quarterback pressure in the win. The senior defensive end made the play of the game early in the fourth quarter, drilling Bulldogs’ quarterback Blake Shapen and knocking the ball free in the process.

It is somewhat confounding. The defense has scored 4 defensive TDs in 5 games. They lead the nation in sacks. They are 5th in the nation in TFLs. That seems elite. They just struggle to tackle and seem content to not give up the big play and instead will give up the field in front of them in the passing game between the 20s. The number of missed tackles we had against MSU was astounding, however.

Clean up the penalities, turnovers and sloppiness on the field and the sidelines and this would of been a double digit win. Vols made enough mistakes to lose 2 games but somehow won when it seemed to be in State's favor. I'll give them a nod for being mentally tough. Play like that at Bama in a few weeks again and they'll get run out of there.
