That "awful" defense of ours...

Duh, sacks are part of the game. We have 20 of them. Why would we take away what we earned. You can’t cherry pick your stats to make your argument sound better. GBO
Because sacks count against the rushing total. If we hadn't sacked their QB they would have had a lot more rushing yards. Duh, learn the game before you comment on something

The rushing D in the 1st 2 SEC games has been a struggle. BUT, they still managed to make enough stops to give our O a chance.

Overall, not bad!

If we just had our 2 starting Corners in Mc oy and Gibson...Hood likely starts at Nickel. This defense would be top 10 nationally. We would be undefeated and have a legit chance to win a Title. Even with just 1 of Moi/Hobbs back at DT.

I believe this firmly. Those are both NFL corners. Sadly I dont think we see either of them back this year. Gibson definitely not...but that likely means we have him next year which will be great IMO with McCoy gone .

This defense is not as bad as they have looked at times and theyre getting better. Not worse. GO VOLS
That’s a level of homerism that is comical, what you are essentially referring to is last year’s defense that gave up 42 to OSU and couldn’t get off the field on numerous third downs

Would it also be true if the defense had not allowed Miss State to score the Vols would have won even without the 14 points?

Currently there are 12 SEC teams in the top 50 for total defense, but Tennessee is no where to be found...

Not sure about you, but I was hoping for a little better!

Are we about winning Stats or winning games? Evidently there’s a difference

Bama held Georgia to 21.
ASU held State to 24.

Our defense is tied with Southern Miss for holding Ms State to 34.
Our defense is one better than Marshall’s (45) holding Georgia to 44.

We have to create turnovers to keep up because we’re unable to get enough stops for the offense to keep up, while scoring 50+ ppg.

Your turn again.

You can equate 17 points to turnovers that MSU a short field.

3 and out on MSU first possession and then a fumbled punt.

2 interceptions.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom.

Relentless pressure on the QB all night. 2 turnovers for scores. Secondary played much better.

The run D was horrible. Did get some good stops in the 4th quarter and seemed to slow down MSU running game.

A lot of people taking bad about the Defense, but The Vols don’t win this game without the 2 scores from the D.

Duh, I do know the game and you can’t discount one thing for the other. Sure we can do better against the run but for being without folks up front and on the edge you sometime have to pick your poison. And we did step up against the run on the last 2 possessions. All this over the top bashing of the defense is stupid. There are things too work on but we do have talent on D. We will continue to improve. And they also have to quality powerful backs. We took away the big pass plays and got very good pressure on the quarterback. Getting tackles behind the line of scrimmage is part of the game, I am well aware they count against rushing yards and they should. And when it counted we stuffed the run! And I will keep commenting so if you don’t like it use your ignore button. GBO

They made a few great plays. They held when it mattered in OT. They also let a mediocre MS score way too many points. It’s a W. But a W with a lot to clean up.
Two of States TDs were from drives that started from turnovers on our side of the field. Even great defenses struggle to stop that momentum swing and short field.

I'm not hitting ignore button on you or anyone else. But you took my comment out of context.

They've played against 3 pretty good offenses and there's only 2 for sure bad offenses on their schedule. Arkansas is hit or miss.
The SEC looks more like the big 12. I know there was only 7 points scored in the second half, but Bama and Georgia dont have the same defenses as before. No one currently does outside of probably Ohio state.
Well, the Razorbacks fired Pittman today. It will be interesting to see how that affects them.

I’m glad you answered your own question. I only remember that muffed punt leaving State in scoring position.

I agree there is plenty of good stats to be positive about. I hope we don’t face any more run attacks as strong as Georgia’s and Miss State’s. If our defense could just close in quicker on the dump passes and QB scrambles, we’d have looked like a top 5 team against State.

NCAA rankings:
Tennessee’s defense is 107th in points/ game allowed. 81st in yards/ game.

I understand we played many backups in the UAB and ETSU games so this doesn’t indicate end of year statistics. My takeaway from the scoring defense and the forced turnovers is that we do not have a top 10 defense but also not a middle of the road defense either. Hopefully this will improve as we gain experience.
We have 53 Freshmen and redshirt Freshmen in our top 84. I am tickle to death that most of them have played in a game this year. We are ranked number 15 th in the Nation. We missed a 43 yard which forced an overtime loss to Georgia. Many of you , on this board and around the Nation, predicted we would win only 6, maybe 7 , games this year.. I am extremely pleased with where we are at this point in the season. I realize the the schedule gets tougher , but I still believe we will win 10 games this season.

I predicted 7 but thought we might get 8 if injuries don't get us. Granted, I haven't always been the most positive of posters, but the limitations of this roster can't be ignored. Still, I find this years team really easy to pull for and watch. Gimme 8 wins and I'd be thrilled.

That’s wild. I had no idea our team was so young.

I believe we could win 11 games, but 10 would be a great year. Struggles tend to snowball though. Let’s hope we continue to improve quicker than the opposition.

Most of us predicted 8-9 wins. Without Joey Aguilar I doubt we would win 7 games. If we win 10, we will have to win at Tuscaloosa or Gainesville and not lose to anyone else. Could happen, not likely

I hate to say it, but we likely get beat by Bama, and maybe FL and/or OK. This team is fun to watch, but eventually the 3rd down issues on defense will hurt us, as well as dropped passes on offense.

Not too many DC’s would want to pair with our offense.
Yeah... terrible to know that your O is going to put 40 points on the board letting you take almost any risk you want to take.

Truth is UT has elite defensive talent and even with the injuries good quality depth in the front 7. The other truth is the Banks is good at developing guys but can't match wits with good offensive playcallers. It isn't a new problem. Lebby ran different versions of that same off tackle play for well over 100 yds... and Banks couldn't figure out how to stop it for 4 or 5 drives. They finally did... but it should have been an immediate change to take that away. Their QB and WRs weren't going to beat UT and especially with the holes in their OL

Teams improve. Hood is as good as the other two. The more #4 gets picked on, the faster he'll improve. Get McCoy and the DLs back and let's make that call then.

Yes. Aguilar needs to get the ball down and guys need to stop dropping catchable balls.

Last in the conference in YPG.
You have right next to it a more relevant stat: yards per play. We’re not great in that (something like 11th in the league) but we’re not last. We’ve faced the most pass attempts, however. We’ve also faced the most run attempts. Our defense has faced significantly more plays than any other SEC, which will skew the total and per game yardage and points.

Our offense wasn't able to get into a rhythm because kits hands saw a medusa and turned to stone and the refs killed multiple drives. A review over one yard that stopped a house call, the phantom PI just to make a couple

You're right. That run by Thomas that got whistled dead was a TD for sure. He was already past the LBs and up to speed dangit. The TV guys sucked but they said that our own sideline asked the refs to check the spot. Bad timing for that 😆
